House Speaker Reacts To ‘Serious Allegations’ Against Rep. Max Miller: ‘It’s Just Begun’

With midterm elections rapidly approaching and control of the House of Representatives hanging in the balance, an intense scandal involving Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) is bringing unwanted negative attention to the GOP.

For his part, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) acknowledged during a recent interview that things “don’t look good” for the Ohio Republican, echoing prior remarks from President Donald Trump.

According to The Hill:

“Well, I mean, they don’t look good right now, of course,” Johnson replied. “But again, what should a Speaker do in this case? I mean, I call out alarming behavior. I try to work every day on decorum and on the ethics of the House.”

He added, “We have a very active and engaged Ethics Committee. They’ve done more work than they need to. I wish it wasn’t necessary.”

Johnson noted that what Miller has said publicly about the “nasty divorce proceeding” lines up with what he has told lawmakers privately: “that he denies all this, and he thinks it’s a hit job on him.”

The Speaker said he would not tell Miller to drop out.

“I will tell Max what I tell everyone,” he continued. “These are serious allegations. I’m the father of two daughters who work on Capitol Hill. I mean, the allegations are serious. I think Max is taking them seriously, I think our colleagues are, but again, we have to allow this process to play out. It’s just begun.”

Others in the party, including his former father-in-law, are putting pressure on Miller to step down:

As Politico reported: 

“I don’t know [Miller]. I haven’t read a whole lot about him, but if [Moreno] thinks he ought to resign, I’m supportive of that,” Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said in an interview.

Miller has denied the allegations, which include pouring hot water on his ex-wife and holding a gun to her head. He has also denied accusations from his ex-wife that he broke his daughter’s collarbone.

Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas condemned Miller, adding, “He should resign. He should quit.”

“I don’t know Mr. Miller’s story, but I trust Bernie so much as a good friend, and his family has such high values,” Marshall said in an interview. “I couldn’t imagine them wanting this out in public. So to go through with this, it makes me think that they’re telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
