JUST IN: GOP Officially Gains New House Seat In Key State

Republicans just picked up ground in the fight for the House, and they did it fast.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed SB121 into law on May 29 after the Louisiana Senate and House both approved it, putting a new congressional map into effect for the 2026 elections.

The new map carves the state into a 5R-1D layout. That is expected to deliver Republicans a new House seat.

The redraw follows the Supreme Court striking down Louisiana’s old map as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

Republicans wasted no time. The legislature moved the bill through quickly, and Landry signed it the same day it cleared.

The official Louisiana Legislature bill record lays out exactly what SB121 does:

2026 Regular Session

SENATE BILL NO. 121

BY SENATOR MORRIS

CONGRESS. Provides for the redistricting of Louisiana congressional districts. (See Act)

Current Status: Signed by the Governor – Act 2

AN ACT

Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:

Section 1. Congressional districts

Louisiana shall be divided into six congressional districts, and the qualified electors of each district shall elect one representative to the United States House of Representatives. The districts shall be composed as follows:

District 3 is composed of Acadia Parish; Calcasieu Parish; Cameron Parish; Iberia Parish; Jefferson Davis Parish; Lafayette Parish; precincts of St. Martin Parish; precincts of St. Mary Parish and Vermilion Parish.

District 4 is composed of Allen Parish; Beauregard Parish; Bienville Parish; Bossier Parish; Caddo Parish; Claiborne Parish; De Soto Parish; Evangeline Parish; precincts of Grant Parish; Natchitoches Parish; Red River Parish; Sabine Parish; St. Landry Parish; Union Parish; Vernon Parish and Webster Parish.

District 5 is composed of Avoyelles Parish; Caldwell Parish; Catahoula Parish; Concordia Parish; East Carroll Parish; East Feliciana Parish; Franklin Parish; precincts of Grant Parish; Jackson Parish; La Salle Parish; Lincoln Parish; Madison Parish; Morehouse Parish; Ouachita Parish; Pointe Coupee Parish; Rapides Parish; Richland Parish; St. Helena Parish.

This is the kind of move that decides control of the House.

Daugherty also pointed to the larger House math, saying Republicans are now favored in 212 seats compared to Democrats’ 207, with the Louisiana redraw adding another seat to the GOP side.

The math is simple. The closer Republicans get to a majority before the tossups are even counted, the fewer competitive seats they need to flip to hold the gavel.

President Trump’s agenda runs through that House majority, and Louisiana just made the path a little wider.

Democrats are furious, but the map is now law and it governs the 2026 cycle.

The map wars are on, and for once Republicans are the ones moving first.
