With Both Sides Warning They’re Ready For War, Here’s Where US-Iran Talks Currently Stand

It remains a fluid situation, but one thing remains clear: Both the US and Iran are holding firm to their positions and are telling each other that they’re prepared for an escalation in hostilities.

The latest updates came amid reports that a US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance could soon be headed to Pakistan for the latest round of talks.

As Newsmax reported, Iranian officials signaled that they weren’t committed to attending:

“By imposing a blockade and violating the ceasefire, Trump wants to turn this negotiating table into a surrender table or justify renewed hostilities, as he sees fit,” said Iran’s powerful parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who headed the delegations to talks two weeks ago in Pakistan.

“We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats, and in the last two weeks we have been preparing to show new cards on the battlefield,” he wrote on X.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have warned of targeting any vessel attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without permission.

Trump has similarly accused Tehran of violating the truce by harassing vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the transit passage for one-fifth of the world’s oil that Iran had all but shut in retaliation for the war launched by the United States and Israel in late February.

In one of a series of angry posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump insisted that the blockade was “absolutely destroying” Iran and said it will not end “until there is a ‘DEAL’,” in which the United States is pressing for Iranian concessions on its contested nuclear programme.

Trump told PBS News that Iran was “supposed to be there” at the talks in Pakistan.

“We agreed to be there,” he said, warning that if the ceasefire expired, “then lots of bombs start going off”.

Social media has been flooded with updates, commentary, and speculation as tensions remain elevated across the Middle East:

Trump just made several strong statements on Iran:

1. The US blockade on the Strait of Hormuz has been a “tremendous success” and the US “totally controls” it.

2. Iran has “no choice” but to come to the table.

3. He does not want to extend the ceasefire.

4. The US caught an Iranian ship yesterday carrying “gifts from China”.

5. The US military is “ready to go in”.

6. Iran has “probably done some restocking” over the past two weeks.

Will these comments increase pressure ahead of any potential talks in Islamabad?

As for those talks in Pakistan’s capital, NBC News provided the latest update as of Tuesday afternoon:

It’s unclear whether or when Vice President Vance will depart Washington for Islamabad at this point, but he will head to the White House for meetings today to discuss what might happen next, a White House official said.

But things remain quite fluid, the official stressed.

“Additional policy meetings are taking place at the White House in which the Vice President will participate,” the White House official said.

The White House and President Trump indicated that Vance would be leading the U.S. delegation to Pakistan, but the timing was never nailed down. At one point yesterday, Trump implied that Vance was already on his way, which was not the case.
