A group of far-left lawmakers informally referred to as “the Squad” began as what appeared to be a fringe element within the Democratic Party.
As their socialist-adjacent agenda began to spread, however, the movement appears to be gaining some momentum … including a forthcoming addition to the Squad’s ranks.
TheBlaze pointed out how, even though Anatolia Mejia campaigned on a clear anti-Israel platform, the pro-Israel group AIPAC might have inadvertently helped her across the finish line in the recent special election to fill former Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s vacant seat:
In the lead-up to the race, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee dumped millions of dollars into the Democratic primary against former Rep. Tom Malinowski for criticizing the Israeli government. The campaign attempted to liken Malinowski’s track record to President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, successfully ousting the congressional hopeful.
ADVERTISEMENTBut in eliminating Malinowski’s candidacy, AIPAC inadvertently boosted Mejia, whose criticisms of the Jewish state go much further.
The report went on to describe Mejia as aligned with the Squad, which includes such controversial Democrats as Reps. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Her stance on Israel has been consistent with that of others in the far-left caucus:
This Election today does have controversy. “Do you believe that the Jewish people have the right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland, what is commonly referred to as Zionism?” Mejia and Justin Strickland don’t raise their hands believing that, but🧵 pic.twitter.com/5ZdNSl0VJh

Yet another hard core anti Israel Democrat is entering Congress.

And AIPAC has criticized the Squad for the anti-Israel view of its members in the past:
A shameful new low.
J Street is now teaming up with the anti-Israel Squad to end American support for systems that protect millions of Israelis from terror attacks.https://t.co/P2X5J4dHhK

This isn’t a principled vision, it’s J Street capitulating to the Squad and crafting a recipe to undermine the U.S.-Israel partnership.
America’s interests are advanced by a strong and secure Israel, including helping our democratic ally protect civilians from missile attacks. https://t.co/JuUhM2cQp9

Earlier this year, Democrats even gave AIPAC a heads up that an outcome like this would be a possibility, as HuffPost reported:
The twist is who the ads are targeting. Former Rep. Tom Malinowski is not only a former ally of the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, but he’s also a mainstream liberal and definitely not the most left-wing candidate in the race. That’s activist Analilia Mejia, a former top official on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) presidential campaign in 2020.

And many Democrats in New Jersey — including some otherwise sympathetic to AIPAC’s cause — think targeting Malinowski is only increasing the chances Mejia can come out of a crowded primary and become the newest member of the progressive “Squad,” a group AIPAC has previously sought to extinguish.
“They’re taking a big risk here,” said one Democratic operative in the state who works for an elected official friendly with AIPAC and requested anonymity to preserve relationships. “Attacking the front-runner from the left is usually going to end up helping the most left-wing candidate in the race.”
Here’s footage of her swearing-in ceremony:
