Australian Police Open Investigation Into Katy Perry Following Ruby Rose’s Sexual Assault Claims

Katy Perry has been known for a lot of things over the years.

Firework. Roar. Teenage Dream. Telling her fans to oppose ICE funding.

Now add this to the list: she’s under active police investigation in Australia.

Ruby Rose — the actress best known from Orange Is the New Black and Batgirl — dropped a bombshell on social media over the weekend, alleging that Perry sexually assaulted her at a Melbourne nightclub back in 2010. Rose says she was in her early 20s at the time and that it took her nearly two decades to come forward publicly.

It’s not just a social media claim anymore. Australian authorities have confirmed they’re taking it seriously.

Fox News obtained the official statement from Victoria Police:

Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) detectives are investigating a historical sexual assault that occurred in Melbourne in 2010. Police have been told the incident occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s CBD. As the investigation remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.

Perry’s camp was quick to fire back. A representative for Perry said in a statement: “The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies. Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”

So there it is. An official criminal investigation — and a flat-out denial from Perry’s side calling the allegations dangerous lies.

Rose says she originally buried the story, telling it only as a “funny little drunk story” because she didn’t know how to process it. She also claimed she stayed quiet in part because Perry allegedly helped her obtain her US visa, creating a sense of obligation and, apparently, leverage.

“I was only in my early 20s. I’m now 40,” Rose wrote on Threads. “It has taken almost 2 decades to say this publicly. Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes.”

On Tuesday, Rose confirmed she had taken the formal step of filing official reports with law enforcement — and said she would now go quiet on the matter per police request.

Deadline had more on her statement:

“As of this afternoon, I have finalized all of my reports. This means I am no longer able to comment, repost, or talk publicly about any of those cases, or the individuals involved.

“It’s going to look like I am ignoring everything from supportive messages, to other people’s experiences, but I’m not. This is a standard request from the police and in many ways, quite the relief. I can start the healing process now. And temporary move forward. I love you all so much.”

Perry, for her part, appeared to post a subtle message on Instagram stories — sharing a clip of her song “By the Grace of God” with the caption “I love you.” Make of that what you will.

The investigation is active. Perry has denied everything categorically. And Rose has lawyered up and gone silent on detective’s orders.

This story is far from over.
