President Trump Slams The Supreme Court’s Tariff Ruling During State Of The Union Address

President Trump called out the Supreme Court for its recent ruling on his tariff policy during his State of the Union address.

The Supreme Court last week, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that President Trump misused the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs on foreign nations.

In his address, Trump called the Supreme Court’s move “unfortunate.”

President Donald Trump on Tuesday blasted a Supreme Court ruling against his tariff policy as “very unfortunate,” insisting the trade measures fueled a historic economic surge.

“Just four days ago, an unfortunate ruling from the United States Supreme Court came down,” Trump said during his State of the Union address.

The president argued the tariffs generated massive revenue and strengthened the country’s economic and national security position. “Countries that were ripping us off for decades are now paying us hundreds of billions of dollars,” he said.

“I use these tariffs to take in hundreds of billions of dollars to make great deals for our country, both economically and on a national security basis.”

Trump’s remarks come after the Supreme Court dealt a blow to his trade agenda, siding against him in a case challenging the legality of tariffs that have reshaped global markets and U.S. supply chains.

Only five of the nine Supreme Court Justices even attended the address, per The Washington Times:

Four of the nine Supreme Court justices attended President Trump’s first State of the Union address of his second term Tuesday night, just days after he railed against the six justices who voted against his sweeping tariff policy.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., with Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Brett M. Kavanaugh and Elena Kagan showed up in their robes. Justice Kagan was the only Democrat-nominated member of the high court in attendance.

They sat straight-faced as he scolded them for the “very unfortunate ruling” from Friday that he overstepped by invoking the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to put blanket tariffs on nations.
He called their decision “unfortunate.”

At a White House press briefing after the ruling, Mr. Trump heavily criticized the six justices who ruled against him.

He told reporters at a White House press briefing that the justices were “barely” still invited to the address and he “couldn’t care less if they come,” but said the three justices who sided with him are “happily invited.”

Two of the six justices who ruled against him were Justice Neil M. Gorsuch and Justice Barrett, both of whom he nominated to the high court.
