Republican Senator REFUSES To Nominate Any Trump Nominees Who Expressed Support For January 6th

Good thing this U.S. Senator is heading out the door.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina said he will not vote to nominate any Trump nominees who expressed support for January 6th.

Tillis made his comments while giving an interview with CNN and noted that he can’t believe Trump pardoned the “thugs” who took over the Capitol.

Politico shared more in-depth details on Tillis’s statement:

Sen. Thom Tillis has a warning for the Trump administration as he finishes out his time in office.

The retiring Senator from North Carolina says in a TV interview that he’ll oppose any future nominees of President Donald Trump who have expressed support for the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“The president should know if there is anyone coming up for a nomination through any committee of my jurisdiction that excuse Jan. 6 that they’re not going to get confirmed in my remaining tenure in the US Senate,” Tillis said in an interview with CNN.

Tillis said he is still angry about the violent events that unfolded after Trump urged supporters to march on the Capitol to protest the 2020 election results.

Upon reelection in 2024, Trump pardoned or commuted more than 1,500 people convicted or charged in connection with the insurrection.

Tillis, who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, said he has told Capitol Police officers that “what the president did sucked.”

“I still call those people who got pardoned by the president thugs,” he said. “There are about 200-300 people that should be behind bars now for what they did on Jan. 6.”

However, Tillis has since announced he will no longer seek re-election.

NBC News reported more on Tillis’ decision to not seek re-election:

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., announced Sunday that he would not run for re-election, one day after he drew President Donald Trump’s ire for opposing the party’s sweeping domestic policy package.

The surprise decision opens up seat in battleground North Carolina that was already set to be one of the most hotly contested races of the 2026 midterms.

Tillis issued a lengthy statement about his decision, saying he had not been enthusiastic about seeking a third six-year term in the Senate.

“As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven’t exactly been excited about running for another term,” Tillis said. “That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home. It’s not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election.”

After Tillis voted against advancing the GOP’s massive domestic policy bill Saturday, Trump attacked him in a series of social media posts and threatened to meet with potential primary challengers.
