Newsom Lashes Out At DeSantis For Offering Assistance Amid LA Riots

Even as the state’s most populous city devolves further into chaos, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom is still apparently nursing his rivalry with GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The latest incident involves a statement from Newsom’s office in response to an offer from the Sunshine State to send members of its state guard to assist in restoring order across Los Angeles.

As anti-law enforcement, pro-illegal immigration rioters continued destroying property and threatening innocent lives, the California governor took time to criticize the DeSantis administration for expressing concern.

According to The Hill:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) office said Tuesday the state’s Division of Emergency Management offered to send the state guard to California to help with the recent unrest over immigration protests in Los Angeles, an offer that was ultimately declined by California.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office confirmed the offer was made from Florida but said “guard were not needed in the first place” and that it declined DeSantis’s “attempt to inflame an already chaotic situation made worse by his party’s leader.”

The development comes as the Trump administration has deployed National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles amid the demonstrations over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

This was the latest chapter in a longstanding rivalry between the two governors, and many social media comments criticized Newsom for rejecting Florida’s offer:

The development came on the heels of Newsom’s effort to prevent federal troops from entering an area that increasingly resembles an active war zone:

A judge shot down that request, per Axios:

A federal judge has declined California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) request for an immediate restraining order to stop the Trump administration from deploying military personnel to enforce immigration law.

Why it matters: President Trump has ordered 4,000 National Guard members and 700 active-duty Marines to Los Angeles after immigration raids sparked protests in the city and beyond.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer declined Newsom’s emergency ruling request, but granted the Trump administration’s request for more time to respond to the governor’s filing. The federal government has until 2 p.m. ET Wednesday to file its response.

Breyer wrote that the state will have an opportunity to file its opposition ahead of a scheduled Thursday hearing.

Despite a curfew put in place Tuesday night, the riots continued across LA, as this coverage reveals:
