President Trump Will Sign Executive Order Making English The Official Language Of The United States

President Trump is planning an executive order making English the official language of the United States.

The new executive order will mark the first time the United States established a national language.

The executive order will also reverse a Clinton-era policy that forces agencies that receive Federal funds to provide services for those with limited understanding of English.

Here’s what CNBC:

President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order making English the official language of the United States, three White House officials told CNBC on Friday.

The order would establish a national language for the first time in U.S. history.

Trump’s order would also rescind former President Bill Clinton’s August 2000 directive requiring agencies and other recipients of federal funds to provide services for those with limited English proficiency, according to a fact sheet shared with CNBC.

Trump’s designation will allow federal agencies to maintain their current policies and continue to provide documents and services in other languages. But it “encourages new Americans to adopt a national language that opens doors to greater opportunities,” according to the fact sheet.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the order earlier Friday morning.

Here’s what The Hill reported:

President Trump is expected to sign an executive order to make English the official language of the United States, rescinding policies that require federal agencies to provide language assistance for non-English speakers.
The order encourages “new Americans to adopt a national language that opens doors to greater opportunities,” but also allows agencies to keep their own policies and documents in other languages if they see fit.

“Agencies will have flexibility to decide how and when to offer services in languages other than English to best serve the American people and fulfill their agency mission,” according to a fact sheet on the order.

The order argues that making English the official language will unify the U.S., saying that about 180 countries have an official language and that while over 350 languages are spoken in the U.S., English is the most widely used.
And, it says the order “celebrates multilingual Americans who have learned English and passed it down.”
