A former New Jersey Democrat councilman was recently charged and arrested in connection with an alleged ballot fraud scheme.
64-year-old Craig Callaway is accused of having orchestrated a complex election fraud operation in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Investigators claim that Callaway was paying individuals between $30-$50 to act as a courier for their mail-in, absentee ballots.
However, instead of acting as couriers for the ballots, Callaway and his team allegedly took the ballots in and voted on behalf of these individuals without their consent.
Callaway has long been accused of engaging in this type of ballot fraud and this is not the first time the former Atlantic City Councilman had a run-in with the law. Here’s what we currently know:

Didn't they claim that mail in ballots didn't contribute to election fraud?

NBC 10 provided this statement from U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger:
“Holding free and fair elections is a bedrock principle of our democracy,” Sellinger said in a statement.
“As alleged in the complaint, the defendant attempted to deprive New Jersey residents of a fair election by fraudulently procuring and casting ballots.
Today’s charge reflect our office’s commitment to hold to account those who try to undermine the electoral process.”
“100% of those who commit vote fraud eventually get caught. Because everyone rats out everyone else. If that happens with the Mafia, what makes anyone think it doesn’t happen in politics,” Rich Shaftan explained.

The Associated Press reports that this was not Callaway’s first run-in with the law:
Callaway previously was sentenced to 40 months in state prison for bribery while a city councilman.
While waiting to report to prison for that offense, he orchestrated a sex sting against a political rival, fellow Councilman Eugene Robinson.
