Here Are The Security Improvements In Place Ahead Of Rescheduled Correspondents’ Dinner

Months after a gunman interrupted the regularly scheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, President Donald Trump is prepared to remedy that next week.

But as organizers put the final pieces in place ahead of Friday’s event, the real focus will be on security.

And as The Hill reported, significant measures have been taken at every step to ensure the safety of the president and others:

The Waldorf ballroom holds roughly 1,000 guests — less than a quarter of the Washington Hilton’s capacity — making it easier for the Secret Service and other security to vet attendees.

“We have confidence in the security plan for this event, and we’ve secured that site before,” Secret Service spokesman Tom Lynch told The Post.

The heightened precautions come after alleged gunman Cole Thomas Allen, a Washington Hilton hotel guest during the April 25 confab, was able to enter near the ballroom before authorities say he attempted to assassinate the president.

Later in the same article:

A security firm has been brought in to screen visitors, and only those who get through with valid tickets will make their way toward magnetometers operated by the Secret Service, according to officials.

With the new venue and clamped down security, one thing will remain the same: mentalist Oz Pearlman will be performing.

Pearlman was in mid-trick when shots were fired outside the ballroom in April and cancelled a scheduled appearance on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” show two days later.

The Waldorf was previously the Trump International Hotel in DC, and the president dined there regularly during his first term.

The upcoming dinner has sparked some social media discussion:

President Trump, please — don’t go to that White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

You’ve been far too gracious to these traitors. My heart still remembers how you reached out after the assassination attempt to make sure they were okay, even as they’ve spent ten brutal years lying, attacking, and trying to destroy you.

You’ve always led with real integrity, strength, and a caring heart they could never understand. They’ve repaid you with nothing but pure evil, hatred, and disgust for everything you stand for.

And then Thursday night — refusing to air your speech? That cut deep. It was one of the most disrespectful slaps in the face after everything you’ve endured for this country.

You deserve respect, loyalty, and honor. They deserve nothing from you.

You are our Commander-in-Chief. They are the enemy of the American people. Skip that dinner, sir.

We stand by you, we love you, and we have your back no matter what. They’ve earned your contempt, not your time.

Politico provided these details about the event in its report a few weeks ago:

“This announcement is a very good thing in that we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling,” Trump said, adding that he plans to give remarks at the event.

“I don’t know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out,” he added. “In any event, it will be a ‘HOT’ ticket!”

Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other Cabinet members were evacuated from the Washington Hilton on April 25 after an armed man opened fire in the hotel as the dinner was underway. He was stopped by security before reaching the main ballroom.

The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, was charged with attempted assassination, assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon and two additional firearms counts. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The WHCA, which came under scrutiny for lack of security in April, said Tuesday that it plans to have “significantly enhanced safety measures and new access procedures” ahead of the July 24 event.

April’s dinner was the first Trump had attended as president. He had previously attended the gala as a private citizen, and on multiple occasions was the butt of jokes by both comedians and then-President Barack Obama. He began boycotting the event in 2017 before announcing in March he would attend this year’s.
