Iran wanted the world to see a strong regime this week. Instead it showed the world a mob screaming for President Trump’s death.
On July 6, 2026, huge crowds packed Tehran for the funeral procession of slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The chants were the same ones the regime has shouted for decades.
Death to America. Death to Israel.
This time mourners added a personal target. Signs called for President Trump’s assassination, and a Trump effigy was strung up along the route.

Iran staged this as a display of power while U.S.-Iran talks sat frozen. The images did the opposite of what the regime intended.
Fox News reported from its live coverage that the funeral unfolded while U.S.-Iran peace talks stayed officially paused for the six-day mourning period, placing the threats inside a diplomatic pause rather than after the crisis had cooled.
Those talks are expected to pick back up afterward in Islamabad, Pakistan, meaning Tehran’s negotiators could soon sit down again after crowds in the capital shouted for the assassination of President Trump.
Fox tied the funeral directly to the anti-American chants and to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s response, with Israel refusing to treat the threats as harmless mourning rhetoric.
That context is the point: Iran wants talks, sanctions relief, and international patience while its public ritual advertised revenge against the U.S.-Israel alliance that damaged the regime.
The backdrop matters. Iran wants sanctions relief and a deal, yet its own supporters spent the mourning period waving nooses and threats.
A regime that lets crowds hang the American president in effigy is not negotiating from a position of strength. It is negotiating from a position of rage.

AP reported that mourners carried placards, banners, and signs calling for President Trump’s death along the procession route, giving the threats a visible place in the state-backed funeral spectacle.
Images from the funeral period included the hanged Trump effigy, a #kill_trump sign, and other revenge displays aimed at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the U.S.-Israel alliance.
The report also described the scale of the shutdown around the mourning ritual, with streets, airspace, and daily life frozen as the regime moved Khamenei’s coffin through Tehran.
Those burial events are set to continue through Thursday, July 9, 2026, extending the message across a state-controlled mourning cycle built around grievance, revenge, and regime survival.
So Iran locked down its own capital to stage a spectacle built around killing an American president. That is the message the ayatollahs chose to send while they claim they want peace.
None of this is proof of a live operational plot. These are regime-supporter threats and revenge messaging, and they are exactly the kind of warning signs that keep security teams awake at night.
The other story is who did not show up.
Al Jazeera reported that massive crowds joined the procession and that three of Khamenei’s sons appeared at funeral events, making the absence of the one son with real power impossible to miss.
Mojtaba Khamenei was named supreme leader shortly after his father was killed, but he still has not appeared in public at the moment Iran is trying to project unity.
Iranian officials say Mojtaba was wounded in the airstrikes that killed his father, and Al Jazeera noted that the severity of those injuries remains unclear.
That succession detail changes the funeral story from simple propaganda into a regime-stability question: the crowd can chant revenge, but the new supreme leader still has not shown his face.
A new supreme leader who cannot or will not show his face at his own father’s funeral is not a picture of a stable regime. It is a picture of a leadership vacuum that revenge chants cannot fill.
Israel is watching all of it and not blinking.
The Times of Israel reported that Defense Minister Israel Katz warned any future Iranian leader who again pushes plans to destroy Israel would be thwarted, keeping Israel’s deterrence message tied directly to the funeral.
Katz said Khamenei was killed because he set in motion and led the plan to wipe out Israel, then used the moment to warn whoever inherits that agenda.
He called the revenge calls against President Trump a disgrace that exposed the true nature of the ayatollah regime, which is the point Iran’s own crowd proved on camera.
Katz also stressed that Israel stays ready to defend itself after the U.S.-Israel war damaged Iran’s strategic capabilities, a reminder that the leverage still belongs to the side Tehran is threatening.

Iran tried to project menace and momentum. What it revealed was a wounded leadership, a hidden new boss, and a base still praying for American blood.
President Trump and Israel are not dealing with a regime ready for peace. They are dealing with one that turned a funeral into a threat, and the only answer to that is leverage and vigilance.
