Israel And US Tout Productive White House Meeting As New Details Emerge

The respective leaders of the U.S. and Israel met in Washington, D.C., this week amid reports of cooling relations between the two nations as the military conflict in Iran continues.

Both sides issued subsequent statements extolling the progress made during the conference.

“I have just concluded an excellent meeting with President Trump,” Netanyahu said in a video statement released after the talks. “When I say excellent, I don’t mean it in a superficial way. It was a conversation marked by full partnership, mutual support, and a shared understanding of our common goal: ensuring that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon.” Netanyahu added that it was “one of the best conversations I have ever had with a president of the United States” and “an opportunity to exchange ideas, and to coordinate on things that are important for the security and the future of Israel.”

A senior Israeli official who accompanied Netanyahu likewise described the meeting as “extremely positive,” saying the leaders held an “excellent and comprehensive discussion” focused “first and foremost” on Iran while reaffirming their “ironclad commitment” to ensuring the Islamic Republic never acquires a nuclear weapon. Another Israeli source said the leaders also reaffirmed that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, “whether through an agreement or otherwise.”

The meeting was held privately without reporters present. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter were among the senior American and Israeli officials who participated in the discussions.

Why it matters: Tuesday’s meeting was the first between Netanyahu and Trump since the start of the war on Feb. 28. It came as Trump is still trying to reach a deal with Iran but also considering a return to major combat operations.

Several hours after the sitdown, Iran launched a missile attack on an American base in Jordan for the first time since Trump paused U.S. strikes in Iran on Friday.

Trump vowed a serious response during an interview with Fox News Wednesday. Iran’s surprise attack could push the president toward a full-scale escalation.

The Israeli official said Netanyahu is awaiting Trump’s decision but made it clear to him that if Iran attacks Israel, the Israeli response will be immediate and powerful.

Inside the room: Iran was the main focus of the 90-minute conversation.

The Israeli official said they discussed three options Trump is considering for next steps:

Reaching a deal with Iran. Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are still negotiating with the Iranians, though at the moment the gaps still seem wide. The Israeli official said Netanyahu told Trump he is skeptical an agreement with the Iranians can be struck.

Continuing the naval blockade on Iran while increasing economic pressure.

Resuming and intensifying military strikes.

“We discussed all of those options at length and very candidly. Not as an attempt to promote one option over another, but to examine what the best outcome would be from each. That’s what the conversation was about,” the official said.
