Even though off-year midterms are generally a cakewalk for the party that’s not in the White House, Democrats seem determined to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.
Instead of learning from the 2024 presidential election that they should be running candidates who appeal to Americans outside of the nation’s deep-blue bubbles, Democratic primaries have been dominated by outright socialists and extremists of various leftist stripes.
It’s gotten to the point that even prominent liberal commentators are noticing, including Van Jones during a recent CNN segment.
The Hill provided these details:
“This is a battle between the establishment and this insurgency, and the roof is collapsing on the Democratic Party establishment tonight,” Jones said during an appearance on CNN’s “The Source.”
Three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, secured wins in their respective House races on Tuesday. The victors include progressive Brad Lander and democratic socialists Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier.
“If Mamdani gets a hat trick, three out of three, this is a new era for the Democratic Party,” Jones told host Kaitlan Collins, before the elections were called. “And you can’t write off New York City because this is the … power center for the establishment and the insurgency, and they’re going head-to-head tonight.”
The New York mayor’s recent run of primary success has sparked considerable social media coverage this week:
NEW: The @NRCC has delivered flowers and a condolences card to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) DC office after the House candidates he endorsed lost to Mamdani-backed socialists in NY last night.

Meanwhile, Mamdani recently doubled down on his support of Chevalier despite her controversial position on illegal immigration.
Per the New York Post:
Mayor Zohran Mamdani wouldn’t distance himself from a handpicked House candidate with a series of unhinged social media posts who now says she is against deporting anyone — even if they committed heinous crimes.
Hizzoner’s candidate in New York’s 13th Congressional district, Darializa Avila Chevalier, made the radical omission late last week in an interview that all deportations are “wrong.”
“If we are saying all deportation is wrong, though, that would seem to also include people who were convicted of breaking US criminal law,” the Vox reporter asked, adding, “Is the deportation wrong for those people?”
“Yes,” the 34-year-old socialist responded, before offering up her rambling, nonsensical reasoning.
Here’s a clip of that exchange:
