Fifty years ago, Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs came together to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial.
In 2026, however, anything that happens in DC while President Donald Trump is in office is sure to enrage a vocal minority with incurable cases of TDS.
And amid threats from some of the most radical critics, a string of artists who had been slated to perform during the upcoming 250th anniversary celebration have announced that they’re dropping out.
The latest developments have prompted organizers of Freedom 250 to reiterate that this is intended to be a unifying celebration, not a political event, per The Hill:
“It is inherently nonpolitical. It is a celebration of our country,” said Freedom 250 spokesperson Julia Friedland in an interview with “Sunrise on The Hill.”
Friedland said she could not speak to the exact negotiations and conversations between event organizers and artists, but she maintained that the event series has always been sold as a nonpartisan celebration of the country’s 250th birthday.
“I don’t think there’s anything partisan about America being around for 250 years,” she said, adding that Freedom 250 events are intended to celebrate American independence and are open to all Americans.
Multiple artists who initially agreed to perform, including rocker Bret Michaels and country singer Martina McBride, publicly distanced themselves from the event after receiving backlash for their involvement. The artists also claim to have been misled about the event’s political ties.
The announcements have fueled social media discussion of efforts to turn the event into something divisive:

As Michaels explained in his announcement, threats against him and those close to him were a central factor in his decision to back out.
According to NewsNation:
“Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable. Because of that, I have made the difficult decision to step away from this performance,” he said.
Michaels said the decision wasn’t about politics and his post did not indicate where he stands on President Donald Trump.
Rapper Young MC, who also pulled out of the event, said artists who signed up were not told there was any political connection to Trump.
