Democrat Sen. Andy Kim was among the over one-hundred rioters “peacefully protesting” outside an ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey today.
He attempt to “negotiate” between the rioters and ICE, but federal agents weren’t having any of that.
Instead, they pushed through the crowd outside the facility’s entrance, anyways.
Sen. Kim ended up getting pepper sprayed in all the chaos that ensued.
He was later seen having his eyes washed out.

Before he was pepper sprayed, Sen. Kim apparently tried to act as a mediator between the agitators and ICE agents.
NJ reported:
Kim initially tried to broker a temporary agreement between the demonstrators and federal agents on the scene in which the agents would scale back tactical teams and immigrant advocates could inspect cars leaving the facility.
But in the meantime, agents began pushing the crowd backward, firing less lethal rounds containing an irritant toward the protesters and making several arrests.
ADVERTISEMENTAt times, the senator stepped between the protestors and agents putting his arms up in a “stop” motion as the scene grew chaotic.
“It’s just burning,” Kim said, referring to his lungs as he received first aid after the ordeal.
“I just wanted to try to keep people safe.”

Along with Sen. Kim, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill also showed up to the ICE riot today.
They are trying to get the facility shut down entirely, and protests have been happening for multiple days.
Detainees inside the facility have also staged a hunger strike, alleging that they are being kept in inhumane conditions — a claim which the Trump administration has pushed back on.
Fox News has more on the situation:
Anti-ICE protesters and authorities clashed Monday outside a New Jersey detention facility where critics allege illegal immigrants are being held in appalling conditions.
Protesters attempted to form a human chain outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark. New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill attempted to gain access to the building but was refused entry, according to local reports.
“My request for access to Delaney Hall was formally denied this morning, raising serious questions about what they are trying to hide from public view,” Sherrill said, according to Patch.
“I have long opposed private detention facilities and will continue to advocate for the closure of Delaney Hall and against any expansion of mass detention facilities in New Jersey, like the proposed facility in Roxbury,” the governor added.
Some protesters threw water and yelled at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, who were seen detaining several demonstrators, WPIX-TV reported.
Protesters and onlookers were heard screaming at ICE agents, who ordered the crowd to move to a grassy area off the road. Agents and protesters stood face-to-face before the situation calmed down.
“No more ICE!” protesters chanted. Others shouted, “Free them all!”
Meanwhile, hundreds of detainees inside have launched a hunger and labor strike, as advocates allege they live in poor conditions and are denied medical treatment and visits. In a group letter released last week, nearly 300 detainees said they live in “inhumane” conditions, citing bad food and medical neglect.
