US Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has repeatedly stood up against what he sees are the excesses and extremes within his own party, and he seems to have done it at the expense of his own political future.
After sailing into office on a wave of support for his leftist agenda, Fetterman continues to vote largely in lockstep with Democrats.
But his occasional critiques of the party on issues like immigration and Israel are enough to convince many in the party that he’s worthy of public condemnation, if not an exile from the party.
Fox News covered the latest example, involving Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro:
While speaking on CNN this week, Shapiro, another rumored 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, appeared exasperated about Fetterman amid reports that he is receiving pressure to jump ship on the party.
“Look, I don’t know what Sen. Fetterman is going to do,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I know that Pennsylvanians voted for a Democrat to represent them in the United States Senate.”
“So, I think he needs to honor that and continue with his service to Pennsylvania, and, hopefully, get back to what he was elected to do and reflect the will of the people,” he added.
Shapiro’s remarks come on the heels of even sharper criticism from other party leaders, and even CNN’s Van Jones denounced the strategy:
🔥 NEW: CNN’s Van Jones SLAMS “nutty” Dems for not supporting John Fetterman being a “moderate Democrat.”
“That should not be illegal in this party. My god you have to agree on 100% of 100% of the Berkeley California agenda to be a Democrat? It doesn’t make any sense.”

But his collapsing popularity isn’t contained to just Democratic Party officials, as recent polling reveals:
John Fetterman's had a 108 pt drop in his net approval with PA Dems since 2023.
His net rating is -40 pt net approval with them.
His net popularity with his own party is worse than all senators who lost a primary this century.

Nevertheless, he has continued to speak out as recently as the date of this writing, including in this post:

The Democratic Party in one of Pennsylvania’s key swing counties took the rhetoric even further, as The Hill reported this week:
The Monroe County Democratic Party in Pennsylvania on Sunday called Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) a “traitor” to Democrats and those who supported his campaign following his repeated support for some Trump administration policies and Cabinet officials.
“TRAITOR to Democrats. TRAITOR to Pennsylvanians. TRAITOR to those who worked tirelessly to elect him and stood with him,” the county chapter of the Democratic Party wrote in a Sunday post on social platform X.
“‘51st vote,’ my a‑‑. This FOX pundit is MAGA. Primary him and vote him out in 2028,” it added.
While Fetterman’s outspokenness has earned him some praise on the opposite side of the political aisle, a growing number of pundits say it has all but ensured he won’t win another major race as a member of his current party:
