Marco Rubio Shuts Down Leftist Theory About His Trip To The Vatican: ‘A Lot To Talk About’

It’s no secret that President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV have some significant differences of opinion, some of which have played out in public statements in both directions over the past several weeks.

But with Secretary of State Marco Rubio heading to meet with the pontiff in Rome, he made it clear that this was not a trip aimed at patching up any perceived rift between the Vatican and the White House.

The Daily Caller reported on a relevant exchange during a press conference this week:

“Is this an attempt to smooth things over with the pope given the rhetoric between President Trump and Pope Leo?” a reporter asked.

“No, I mean, it’s a trip we had planned from before and obviously we had some stuff that happened,” Rubio said. “No, look, there’s a lot to talk about with the Vatican and I’ll give you one example. The pope just had a trip to Africa where the church is growing very vibrantly. And we have shared concerns about religious freedom, religious freedom in different parts of the world and we’d love to talk to them about that.”

The State Department further said Rubio will meet with the Holy See “to discuss the situation in the Middle East and mutual interests in the Western Hemisphere.”

As he departed from Castel Gandolfo, Leo said that the Church has consistently spoken out against nuclear weapons. He added that anyone who wishes to criticize him should do so “truthfully.”

Trump accused the pope of “endangering a lot of Catholics” because he allegedly believed it is “fine for Iran to have a nuclear weapon.” In response to Trump, Rubio stated that allowing Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon could endanger Catholics and Christians around the world.

Rubio’s upcoming trip to the Vatican has sparked significant social media chatter in recent days:

The Hill also reported on Rubio’s remarks:

Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s meeting with Pope Leo XIV on Thursday will include a “frank conversation” about disagreements between the Vatican and the Trump administration, the U.S. ambassador to the Holy See said Tuesday.

Brian Burch, who took up his post in September, said “fraternity and authentic dialogue” will guide the talks, addressing tensions between the U.S. and Vatican over the pope’s stated opposition to the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran and retaliation from President Trump.

“Nations have disagreements, and I think one of the ways that you work through those is … through fraternity and authentic dialogue,” Burch told journalists, as reported by Reuters.

“I think the secretary is coming here in that spirit, to have a frank conversation about U.S. policy, to engage in dialogue,” he added.
