You really can’t make this stuff up.
For weeks, President Trump practically begged NATO to step up and help the United States reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The response from our so-called European allies? Crickets. They sat on the sidelines while American sailors did the heavy lifting in one of the most critical waterways on the planet.
And now — now that the crisis is resolved, now that Iran has declared the Strait open and oil is flowing again — NATO picks up the phone and asks if they can help.
President Trump’s response was everything you’d expect from a man who doesn’t forget.
He took to Truth Social this morning to let the world know exactly how he feels about NATO’s sudden offer of assistance:

Now that the Hormuz Strait situation is over, I received a call from NATO asking if we would need some help. I TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY, UNLESS THEY JUST WANT TO LOAD UP THEIR SHIPS…
Let that sink in for a moment. The President of the United States just told the most powerful military alliance in history to stay away — unless they want to fill up their gas tanks while they’re at it.
And frankly, can you blame him?
This has been building for weeks. When Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz back in early March, it sent global oil prices through the roof. Brent crude spiked to $126 per barrel. Seventy percent of shipping traffic through the Strait shut down overnight. The IRGC attacked at least 21 merchant vessels and reportedly laid sea mines throughout the waterway.
The United States stepped up. The Navy deployed a full blockade operation. American forces worked alongside Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar to stabilize the region. President Trump personally thanked those Gulf nations this morning for their help.
But NATO? The alliance America has poured trillions of dollars into over the decades? They wanted no part of it.
Eric Daugherty summed up the moment perfectly:
🚨 HOLY CRAP. President Trump just told NATO to SCREW OFF, saying they're a "paper tiger"

He’s right. Trump never forgets — and he shouldn’t.
CNN reported extensively on the rift between Trump and NATO allies over the Hormuz situation:
Trump told The Telegraph he would “absolutely” consider withdrawing the US from NATO and called the alliance a “paper tiger,” adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin shares this view.
ADVERTISEMENTEuropean leaders faced impossible choices due to Trump’s year of criticism, tariff assaults, and demands. They couldn’t simultaneously support him and maintain political credibility at home.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated allies’ response was “very disappointing” and hinted Trump would “reexamine” commitments when the war ends.
So while NATO allies were busy protecting their political credibility at home, American forces were securing a shipping lane that Europe depends on far more than the United States does. The irony is almost too thick.
And here’s the part that really stings for NATO. While Trump was telling them to stay away, the leaders of France, UK, Italy, and Germany were reportedly meeting in Paris to “coordinate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz” — a strait that was already being reopened without them.
Lord Bebo highlighted the absurdity:

Now, these Paper Tigers (France, UK, Italy & Germany) are meeting in Paris "to coordinate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz" https://t.co/PK6eitEHJA pic.twitter.com/SCWRVrYp9K
Think about that. Four major European powers are literally holding a summit to discuss how to reopen a strait that’s already open — because one man and one Navy already got the job done.
The National Desk noted Trump’s frustration has been building for weeks:
President Trump stated that NATO has not supported the U.S. and won’t in the future, citing the ongoing Iran conflict.
ADVERTISEMENT“NATO wasn’t there for us, and they won’t be there for us in the future!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
On April 1, Trump claimed the U.S. spent trillions on NATO without receiving help regarding Iran. Multiple NATO allies reportedly weren’t consulted about U.S. Iran operations, according to Wall Street Journal reporting.
The Strait of Hormuz crisis was a defining test for the NATO alliance — and they failed it spectacularly. When the chips were down and the U.S. needed backup, Europe looked the other way. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar showed up. NATO didn’t.
Now the crisis is over, Iran is removing sea mines, and the Strait is flowing again. Oil prices dropped 11% on the news this morning. And NATO wants credit for showing up to a party that’s already ended.
President Trump’s message couldn’t have been clearer. You want to help? You had your chance. Now load up your ships with oil and go home.
