Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy confronted CNN anchor Dana Bash on Sunday.
The tense exchange covered Anthony Fauci, the COVID lockdowns and gain-of-function research.
The interview turned combative when Bash appealed to scientific experts and Kennedy rejected the premise that the same institutions deserve unquestioned trust after the pandemic.
“All you know how to do is repeat things that people told you and say, ‘Trust the experts,’” Kennedy told her.
He then accused Fauci of lying to the public and told Bash she was again relying on authorities instead of examining the record for herself.
Kennedy’s challenge landed days after Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment during a contentious Senate hearing about the government’s pandemic response and the origins of COVID-19.
The Associated Press reported that Fauci declined to answer more than 100 times while senators questioned him about his prior testimony, his pandemic-era diary and research connected to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Fauci has denied wrongdoing and called the accusations against him false. His defenders argue that the hearing was designed to entrap him and that no credible evidence links him to creating the pandemic virus.
Republican senators, however, say Fauci’s private diary entries and the public statements he made during the crisis do not tell the same story.
Senator Rand Paul subpoenaed Fauci to testify under oath and released more than 1,000 pages of the former health official’s diary before the hearing. Paul says the entries show a gap between what Fauci privately considered during the pandemic’s early days and what he told Congress and the country.
Fauci received a preemptive pardon from President Joe Biden before leaving office. Republican senators have argued that the pardon would not protect any false testimony delivered after it was issued, increasing the legal stakes surrounding the new hearing.
Kennedy also defended President Trump’s pandemic record, saying Trump pushed repeatedly to reopen the country while Fauci resisted.

The shutdowns closed businesses, disrupted schools, isolated families and transferred enormous power to public-health bureaucracies.
Americans were told those measures were temporary and guided strictly by science. Years later, many of the officials who imposed them still resist basic questions about the evidence behind their decisions and the damage that followed.
Kennedy said Fauci’s diaries show President Trump calling him repeatedly and pressing to get the country open again.
The CNN exchange then moved to gain-of-function research, the practice of altering pathogens to study how they might spread or cause disease.
Kennedy argued that scientists defending the work cannot identify a historic benefit large enough to justify its catastrophic risks.

Kennedy stated as fact that COVID-19 and other pandemics came from gain-of-function work. That remains disputed; many scientists continue to favor a natural origin for COVID-19, while others believe a laboratory-related incident is plausible.
The larger policy question does not depend on settling every detail of COVID’s origin.
A research program capable of producing a more dangerous pathogen creates a risk that cannot be erased by expert assurances.
President Trump moved against that risk last year.
In a May 2025 executive order, the White House paused dangerous federally funded gain-of-function research in countries of concern and directed agencies to strengthen oversight of other high-risk biological work.
The administration said the old system lacked adequate transparency, enforceable safeguards and accountability.
The order directed federal agencies to identify and suspend covered work in countries where oversight is inadequate or where research could threaten American security. It also required the government to revise the policy framework for other dangerous biological research conducted inside or outside the United States.
The new framework was ordered to include stronger enforcement, public reporting and consequences for researchers or institutions that violate the rules. The administration also called for a strategy to prevent federal funds from reaching work that could endanger public health, national security or the economy.
The policy does not settle the argument over COVID’s origin. It recognizes that the downside of a laboratory failure can be so enormous that voluntary assurances and fragmented oversight are not enough.
That is the central problem Kennedy exposed on CNN.
The officials who demanded extraordinary public obedience during COVID now want the public to treat their authority as the end of the debate.
But trust is not a permanent entitlement.
It has to be earned with evidence, candor and accountability.
After lockdowns, mandates, changing guidance and years of unanswered questions, Americans have every right to demand all three.
