The new Florida law will require proof of citizenship to vote, making voter ID stricter, and limit mail-in ballots.

NBC News reported:

The new law, most of which won’t take effect until after the midterm elections, is Florida’s version of the federal SAVE America Act, a bill President Donald Trump has championed. That measure is currently stalled in the U.S. Senate, where it lacks the 60 votes needed to advance under current rules.

“This bill protects and expands integrity in our voter registration process,” DeSantis said.

This comes one day after President Trump signed a sweeping executive order to secure our elections.

President Trump was forced to take direct action after the SAVE America Act stalled in the Senate.

Similarly, Gov. DeSantis does not have a lot of confidence in the passage of that nationwide legislation.

DeSantis said he’s “not anticipating” that the federal version of the legislation, which President Trump has been pushing for, will be passed and argued the new requirement will protect the integrity of state elections.

“Our Constitution in the state of Florida says only American citizens are allowed to vote in our elections, so we need to make sure that is the law,” the Florida governor said during a press conference.

Voter advocates say the new requirement will harm citizens who cannot readily produce documents that prove their citizenship.

Retirement community and student IDs will not be accepted as a valid form of identification. Voters will need to present a birth certificate, social security card, passport or alternate evidence of U.S. citizenship.
