More from WILX:

There were numerous slide-offs and crashes in the area, including multiple jackknifed semi-trucks, Ottawa County officials said.

Sparks said investigators believe a vehicle hit a semi-truck, setting off a “chain reaction.” He said “a couple dozen” tractor trailers were involved in the pile-up.

As of 6 p.m., the freeway remains closed in both directions. Michigan State Police officials say drivers should avoid the area and seek an alternate route. MSP and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office personnel are handling the scene.

Buses from Hudsonville High School (HHS) and Max Transit were used to assist OCSO with transporting stranded motorists from the scene to Hudsonville High School, where they were able to get help or schedule rides home.

Drivers stranded at the scene are being told to remain inside their vehicles until they’re able to get on a bus.

“A major pileup involving 30–80+ vehicles (semis, tractor-trailers, cars) on I-196 Westbound, a few miles after the Byron exit near Zeeland, MI. Whiteout/near-blizzard conditions with extreme visibility loss. Expect injuries, search-and-rescue on scene, and ongoing road closures,” Chicago & Midwest Storm Chasers stated.

“If you’re in the area, avoid the stretch and follow police/DO T detours. Stay tuned for updates on injuries, closures, and travel delays,” it added.

AccuWeather shared:

Weather conditions may quickly become life-threatening, especially for those involved in the crash or stranded in traffic for several hours. Shortly after the crash, AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures were hovering around 10 degrees below zero with wind gusts of 35 mph and blowing snow.

Buses are being used to transport stranded motorists to Hudsonville High School, where they can be safe and warm while they arrange for rides home, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Snow squalls and heavy bands of lake-effect snow are tracking across the Midwest and part of the Northeast, where they can quickly reduce visibility and create dangerous driving conditions.

“Road conditions are treacherous,” Michigan State Police said. “Driving beyond your ability increases the risk for serious crashes. If you must travel, slow down, increase following distance, and use extreme caution.”
