Today, President Trump took a huge step to completely overhaul the H1-B visa system.
He just signed an executive order that would raise the annual fee companies have to pay to keep an H1-B worker onboard to $100,000.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick explained that the idea behind this is to get U.S. businesses to hire and/or train American workers rather than hiring from overseas.
Basically, no longer will companies be able to hire foreigners to work for cheap at the expense of American workers.
If they want to keep foreign workers or hire from overseas, then they will have to pay significantly.

Currently, the H1-B visa program accepts hundreds of thousands of foreign workers into our nation every single year.
Most of those are coming from India to work in tech.
Retuters has the numbers:
Roughly two-thirds of jobs secured through the H1-B program are computer-related, government figures show, but employers also use the visa to bring in engineers, educators and healthcare workers.India was the largest beneficiary of H-1B visas last year, accounting for 71% of approved beneficiaries, while China was a distant second at 11.7%, according to government data.In the first half of 2025, Amazon.com (AMZN.O), opens new tab had more than 10,000 H-1B visas approved, while Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab and Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab had over 5,000 H-1B visa approvals each.
In case you’re curious, here’s an interesting chart of the companies that hire the most H1-B visa workers:

Before President Trump signed this new order, the application fees were only around $1,700-$4,500, which incentivized companies to hire more and more foreign workers.
The New York Post reported on the details of President Trump’s executive order:
The policy would apply to all H1-B visa holders, including those seeking to renew their status, he said.
The $100,000 fee would have to be paid out per year for the next six years.
“If you’re going to train somebody, you’re going to train one of the recent graduates from one of the great universities across our land. Train Americans. Stop bringing in people to take our jobs,” Lutnick said.
“Either the person is very valuable to the company and America, or they’re going to depart and the company is going to hire an American.”
This is a massive win for the American worker — especially those in tech who have been losing out on job opportunities to Rajesh from India who will work for half the salary for years now…
Those days are over.
Now is a great time to be in the market for a new job.
I have a feeling a lot of positions are going to be opening very soon.
