JUST IN: 2 State Troopers Ambushed in ‘Active Situation’ Per Governor [UPDATE]

What is being described as an “active situation” has landed at least 2 Pennsylvania State Troopers in the hospital.

From recent reporting it appears that both those officers are expected to survive, though it has not yet been confirmed if they were the only victims.

The troopers were apparently ambushed while inside their vehicle, with a volley of incoming shots fired at them while responding to a call.

This is some of the footage coming from the scene from the local ABC News affiliate out of Pittsburgh, PA:

Details concerning the identity of the suspect have not yet been released.

Both State Troopers were taken to area hospitals.

Here is more footage reportedly taken from the scene that has begun circulating on social media showing the enormous law enforcement response to the area of the incident:

The authorities are asking the public to continue avoiding the area, as reported by Fox News:

Two Pennsylvania state troopers were shot Thursday afternoon while responding to a call in Susquehanna County, according to Governor Josh Shapiro, who shared the news during a public appearance in Bucks County.

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) are actively investigating the shooting, which occurred in the northeastern part of Susquehanna County. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area near Route 171, approximately five miles north of Thompson, citing ongoing safety concerns.

PSP noted that further details about the suspect will be released when available.

Both troopers were transported to nearby hospitals. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.

In a post on X, U.S. Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan Jr., said the troopers were in stable condition.

Here’s the post mentioned in that article shared by Rep. Bresnahan confirming that both Troopers will apparently pull through:

Gov. Shapiro advised as well that the situation was “ongoing” at the site of the ambush, and echoed the State Police call for the public to avoid the area.

He also called for prayers for the Troopers and their families, saying that he would be meeting with them shortly:

Here is the full text of PA Governor Shapiro’s post on X:

Today, two Pennsylvania State Troopers were shot while responding to a call in Susquehanna County. Both Troopers were transported to local hospitals – and I’ve communicated with Colonel Paris and am on my way to join them now. Lori and I are praying for these brave Troopers, and our thoughts are with their families, friends, and every member of the State Police.

The Governor was taking part in a public event when he was briefed on the attack on the Troopers.

He shared the news from the podium at the outset of that event, as covered by ABC News:

As of the time of this report, the suspect has not been identified.

But it is now being reported that the suspect “died”.

There are no details yet on whether the suspect was killed by the State Troopers returning fire, or by his own hand.

The County Coroner also emphasized, on her way to the scene, that she was not informed how many people were dead on scene, according to a report from the Associated Press:

A suspect who ambushed and shot two Pennsylvania state troopers Thursday died and the troopers were hospitalized, officials said.

The attack took place in the rural area near Thompson shortly after 11 a.m., state police Col. Christoper Paris told reporters after he and Gov. Josh Shapiro met with one of the wounded officers in a hospital. Both troopers were said to be in stable condition.

Paris said the two troopers, whose full names were not immediately released, “were dispatched to check the welfare of an individual. And there was additional information about shots being fired. We will have more information about the specifics of how that call came in. But upon their arrival, they were immediately fired upon and ambushed. They are very lucky to be alive.”

One trooper applied a tourniquet to another and a third trooper was able to help rescue them, Paris said.

Angelica Howell, a deputy coroner in Susquehanna County, said shortly after 3 p.m. that she was on her way to where the shooting occurred. Howell said authorities did not indicate whether there was more than one person dead when they asked the coroner’s office to respond.

“I can tell you that the actor is deceased and more information will be released specifically about what happened today,” Paris said. The troopers’ police vehicles were hit by multiple bullets, he said.

We are still waiting on word concerning the suspect’s identity, and whether the individual acted alone — as well as a motive.

The incident has been described multiple times by law enforcement as an “ambush”, denoting a planned attack.

We will bring you more information as it becomes available on this developing story.

UPDATE [ 5:00PM CST – 8/7/25 ]

Colonel Christopher Paris of the PA State Police has emphasized the chaotic nature of the ambush that led to the State Troopers being shot.

In a press conference at the hospital alongside PA Gov. Josh Shapiro, Paris confirmed both Troopers were shot and “are lucky to be alive”.

He also said that there is no further threat to the community.

The two Troopers were in different vehicles when they both took fire and were “ambushed”, with both patrol cars “riddled with bullets”.

Gov. Shapiro began the press conference by crediting one of the Troopers with saving the life of his fellow Officer by using a tourniquet before backup arrived via a Third trooper.

Here’s a clip of that press conference as carried by ABC affiliate WENP 16 out of Scranton, PA:

That same ABC News affiliate also reports that the suspect did die by return from from the Troopers.

His identity and motive remains unanswered at this time, as reported by ABC News Affiliate 6 out of Scranton:

Troopers Perechinsky and Jenkins were airlifted to a hospital where they remain in stable condition.

The gunman was eventually shot and killed, according to state police. His identity has not yet been released.

Governor Shapiro broke the news during an event in Bucks County, later visiting one of the injured troopers at Geisinger CMC in Scranton.

Shapiro says Trooper Perechinsky saved lives, including his partner’s, Trooper Jenkins.

The governor met with Perechinsky and his family and said he is in good spirits. He is also on his way to see Trooper Jenkins. It is unclear which hospital he is being treated at.

We will continue to bring you updates to this developing story once the suspect’s identity and motives become clear.
