President Trump Plans To Meet With Putin, Here’s When

This is quite a shocking development.

The New York Times has reported that President Trump is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as next week.

The announcement comes just hours after U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff held a meeting with Putin in Russia.

Reuters provides more details on the possible meetup:

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet in person with Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as next week, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the plan.

Trump then plans to meet with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the newspaper reported, adding that the plans were disclosed in a call with European leaders on Wednesday.

The White House did not immediately respond to the report but earlier on Wednesday Trump acknowledged that he spoke with European leaders after U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff’s “highly productive” meeting with Putin in Russia.
While noting that “great progress” was made during the meeting, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come.”

Trump, who promised to end Russia’s war in Ukraine on “day one” during his presidential campaign, has held several phone calls with Putin and has met with Zelenskiy since returning to the White House in January.

However, in recent weeks, he has become increasingly frustrated with Moscow over a lack of progress towards ending the three-year conflict.

The Hill provided the latest details on U.S. and Russia relations:

A senior U.S. official said sanctions on Russia’s key trading partners are expected to go into effect on Friday, after President Trump’s special mission envoy Steve Witkoff met Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump said Wednesday afternoon that Witkoff and Putin had a “highly productive” meeting, claiming that “great progress” was made.

The senior official said the talks between Witkoff and Putin in Moscow, their fifth meeting since Trump came back into office, “went well” and lasted about three hours.

“The Russians are eager to continue engaging with the United States. The secondary sanctions are still expected to be implemented on Friday,” the official said on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss diplomatic talks.

Trump said in mid-July that Russia could face “severe” tariffs if it did not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine within the next two months. The president said at the time he would slap a 100 percent “secondary” tariff on countries that do business with the Kremlin, including those that buy Russian oil and gas.
