He called on Pakistan to act to stop the violations to avoid escalation along the border, and says that India is “giving an adequate and appropriate response”.

India and Pakistan had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire on Saturday, ending tensions that had been rising since an April attack on Indian-controlled Kashmir, both countries confirmed.

India’s chief minister for the territory of Kashmir and Jammu, Omar Abdullah, posted on X in the last few hours that explosions could be heard in Srinagar, the largest city of the region.

“There is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” he wrote.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister broadcast an address to the nation at 11 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET) but it did not address any possible ceasefire violations.

Per CBS News:

Pakistan officials denied violating the ceasefire and instead said India had committed violations in “some areas,” adding that its troops were “handling the situation with responsibility and restraint.”

“Pakistan remains committed to faithful implementation of (the) ceasefire between Pakistan and India, announced earlier today,” a spokesperson for the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. “We believe that any issues in (the) smooth implementation of the ceasefire should be addressed through communication at appropriate levels. The troops on (the) ground should also exercise restraint.”

Earlier Saturday, residents reported the loud explosions in Srinagar and Jammu were followed by a blackout in the two cities.

Omar Abdullah, the region’s top elected official, said in a post on social media: “What the h*** just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!!” In another post, he said: “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up.”

Cross-border shelling and gunfire were also reported from at least five places along the Line of Control, a de facto frontier that divides disputed Kashmir between two nuclear-armed nations.
