FAA Investigates Near Crash Of Gonzaga Basketball Team’s Charter Jet

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the near crash of the Gonzaga men’s basketball team’s charter jet almost crashing into another plane.

At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, air traffic controllers called for an emergency stop of an Embraer E135 jet carrying Gonzaga’s basketball team after the jet almost crossed a runway where a second plane was about to depart.

The FAA reported, “When the Embraer E135 jet operated by Colorado-based Key Lime Air proceeded to cross the hold bars, air traffic controllers told the pilots to stop.”

Per Yahoo News:

An investigation is underway after a private jet carrying a college basketball team was ordered to stop as it neared a runway where another aircraft was taking off at Los Angeles International Airport.

Around 4:30 p.m. Friday, air traffic controllers directed a chartered flight that had just arrived from Spokane, Wash., to hold short of crossing a runway where a second plane was departing, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

When the Embraer E135 jet operated by Colorado-based Key Lime Air “proceeded to cross the hold bars, air traffic controllers told the pilots to stop,” the FAA said in a statement.

“Stop, stop, stop,” a controller can be heard saying on a livestream video feed that captured the incident.

Plane spotter Kevin Ray, who created the YouTube channel where the video was posted, can be heard exclaiming with surprise.

“Wow! In the years I’ve been doing this, I’ve never heard a ATC controller tell a plane to ‘Stop, stop, stop,'” he says in the video.

Per NBC Los Angeles:

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation following a close call on a runway at LAX Airport.

The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. Friday, as an Embraer E135 charter jet carrying the Gonzaga University Men’s Basketball team from Spokane, Washington had just landed and was taxiing to its gate.

The plane, operated by Denver-based charter flight company Key Lime Air, was instructed to hold at a certain point so it would not cross the runway into the path of an Atlanta-bound Delta Airlines commercial flight taking off.

The Gonzaga team’s plane seemingly rolled past the intended holding point, leading the air traffic controller in the LAX tower to tell it to “STOP, STOP, STOP.”

“Air traffic controllers directed Key Lime Air Flight 563 to hold short of crossing a runway at Los Angeles International Airport because a second aircraft was taking off from the runway at the time,” an FAA spokesperson confirmed.

“When the Embraer E135 jet proceeded to cross the hold bars, air traffic controllers told the pilots to stop. The jet never crossed the runway edge line,” the spokesperson added, while also confirming the Federal agency had opened an investigation into the incident.
