Democrat Lawmaker Sentenced For Sexual Misconduct With a Minor

Former Democrat Senator Otoniel “Tony” Navarrete was sentenced to one year in prison for sexually abusing a child.

A Maricopa County Superior Court sentenced former Arizona state senator Tony Navarrete to one year in prison and ten years of supervised release after Navarrete was found guilty of having sexual conduct with a minor.

Navarrette was arrested in 2021 and was charged with sexual misconduct with a boy he was living with.

According to police reports, Navarrete sexually abused the boy when he was 12 years old.

Here’s what AZ Family reported:

A former Democratic Arizona state senator has been sentenced to one year for sexually abusing a child.

Sen. Otoniel “Tony” Navarrete was sentenced on Friday after a jury delivered a split verdict in February in his child molestation case.

During sentencing, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge ordered one year in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for his single count of child sex crime. He is also now required to register as a sex offender.

Earlier this year, a jury deemed Navarrete not guilty on one count of molestation of a child and sexual conduct with a minor but declared Navarrete guilty on a separate charge of sexual conduct with a minor.

A mistrial was declared in Oct. 2023, when jurors at the time were split on a decision about the allegations against Navarrete. The former Democratic politician was arrested in 2019 and indicted in 2021 on seven child sex crime charges.

Court documents at the time stated Navarrete sexually touched the victim multiple times over a few years. Navarrete reportedly apologized to the victim and regretted his actions in a phone call recorded by police.

Per The Post Millennial:

A former Democratic state lawmaker in Arizona has been found guilty on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor and will get one year in prison.

Otoniel “Tony” Navarrete was sentenced to one year in prison and 10 years of supervised release after being found guilty of having sexual conduct with a minor, per Fox 10. He was found not guilty of sexual molestation, which was one of the original charges brought.

Navarrete was arrested in 2021 on charges of sexual misconduct with a boy who he was living with. The boy accused the former state lawmaker of touching him inappropriately when he was around the age of 12 or 13.

This allegedly continued until the boy was around the age of 15. Navarrete was elected to be a state representative in Arizona’s 30th district and was then elected to state senate in 2018.

After allegations started coming out about the sexual misconduct, the democratic lawmaker resigned and then-State Rep. Raquel Terán took his place.
