HEADS-UP: FDA Approves First-Ever mRNA Flu Vaccine Despite Concerning Data

This new vaccine, called mFlusiva, is targeted at older adults over the age of 50.

It’s made with the same dangerous mRNA technology used in COVID vaccines, which works by altering your DNA to create a “harmless” piece of the flu virus.

This new “safe and effective” vaccine is expected to hit the markets just in time for the 2026-2027 flu season this fall.

AP News provided an overview of the newly-approved experimental mRNA flu shot:

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new kind of flu vaccine for older people, the first made with the same mRNA technology that was key to ending the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturer Moderna said.

The shot, named mFlusiva, is intended for adults age 50 or older. Other brands of flu shots already have begun arriving in pharmacies ahead of fall vaccination season, and Moderna said late Wednesday that it expects some of its new version to be available soon at select retailers.

While there already are multiple flu vaccine options in the U.S., including three specifically recommended for people age 65 or older, tens of thousands of Americans die from influenza every year and older adults are among the most vulnerable.

Flu vaccines must be updated annually to best match circulating strains of the virus. Vaccines made with the Nobel Prize-winning mRNA technology are faster to manufacturer than other types, and experts say this additional option might help if the shape-shifting flu virus mutates in a way that requires suddenly brewing new doses.

In addition to approving the vaccine for all adults over the age of 50, the FDA has also granted “accelerated approval” for seniors aged 65 and older.

CNBC reported further:

The shot, mFlusiva, was given a traditional approval for adults aged 50 to 64, ​and an accelerated approval for ​those 65 years and ​older.

Moderna has agreed to run an additional study and submit more data in adults 65 and older to confirm the vaccine’s benefit in that age group.

“Flu remains a significant public health ⁠challenge, ‌and mFLUSIVA provides an important new option for America’s seniors,” Moderna ⁠said in a statement.

The approval was based on data from a late-stage trial involving more than 40,000 adults aged 50 and older, which showed the shot was 26.6% more effective than a licensed standard-dose flu vaccine.

The ‌company also submitted separate late-stage data showing the vaccine generated stronger antibody responses than Sanofi’s high-dose flu vaccine in adults 65 and older.

MFlusiva would compete ​with flu vaccines from Sanofi, GSK, CSL Seqirus, and AstraZeneca.

Moderna’s vaccine uses mRNA technology to prompt the body to produce influenza antigens and trigger an immune response, an approach that could potentially allow faster updates to match circulating strains.

In comparison, ⁠conventional flu shots are largely egg-based and contain viral proteins.

The FDA’s decision marks a troubling reversal from an earlier rejection of mFlusiva.

Back in February, regulators under RFK Jr.’s Health and Human Services Department refused to even consider approving the experimental mRNA shot, citing trial standard concerns.

But, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary ended up stepping in and ordering the agency to review the new vaccine.

Then, on Wednesday, it was officially approved — despite serious, documented concerns.

You see, the clinical trial of this new vaccine found much higher rates of side effects among recipients.

This shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone who didn’t bury their head in the sand after the COVID pandemic, when the so-called “experts” were trying to force us all to take the clot shot.

Despite the CDC now admitting the COVID vaccines weren’t as “safe and effective” as they wanted us to believe five years ago, Moderna once again wants you to inject mRNA into your body.

USA Today provided some additional background on this dangerous vaccine technology:

While the technology behind mRNA vaccines has been in development for decades, it came to the forefront during the COVID-19 pandemic, when drug companies Pfizer and Moderna rolled out the first shots to fight the respiratory virus.

Though mRNA science has shown promise in treating or preventing disease beyond COVID, known vaccine skeptic and Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has rallied against its development, canceling roughly $500 million in related projects in 2025. Earlier this year, the FDA, which operates under HHS, declined to review the mRNA flu shot before changing course about two weeks later.

An mRNA vaccine, or messenger ribonucleic acid vaccine, is a type of immunization that uses a copy of a molecule called messenger RNA to help the body create an effective immune response. mRNA molecules already exist in the cells in your body and work to communicate information between your DNA and cells, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Unlike traditional vaccines, which often use weakened, killed or partial viruses to trigger immunity, mRNA vaccines work by delivering genetic instructions that teach the body to make a harmless viral protein and mount an immune response, according to the Cleveland Clinic and the National Institutes of Health.

Think of a traditional vaccine as showing your immune system a sample of the virus. An mRNA vaccine instead gives your body the recipe to make a harmless sample on its own, so the immune system can practice recognizing it. It’s like getting a play-by-play of the other team’s moves and how to defeat them before the game even starts.

Once cells finish making the necessary proteins, they quickly break down the mRNA, which leaves the body after a few days. mRNA from vaccines does not alter DNA, notes NIH.

Before the new flu approval, the COVID-19 vaccines Comirnaty (Pfizer) and Spikevax (Moderna) were the only mRNA vaccines available to the public. Skeptics of the COVID shots at the time noted concerns about how quickly it was released. However, development of mRNA technology has spanned decades, and new studies have shown its promise in the treatment of other diseases, like cancer.

Though medical groups and experts have said there is no widespread evidence that COVID-19 vaccines are unsafe, the Trump administration has pushed for a COVID-19 vaccine injury list.

The side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine are generally on par with other vaccines, including tenderness at the injection site and a small chance of allergic reaction. In rare cases, mRNA COVID vaccines have been associated with an increased risk of myocarditis and pericarditis, the CDC says.
