Rep. Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in congressional history, was hospitalized Sunday after the vehicle carrying her to church was struck in a hit-and-run crash near Toledo, Ohio.
The 80-year-old Democrat was a passenger at the time. Her office said she remained active and alert while receiving treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening.
The crash unfolded late Sunday morning near North Detroit and Central avenues in Toledo.

Fox News reported that Kaptur was traveling to a church service when the vehicle in which she was riding was struck.
Her congressional office said she was hospitalized but remained active and alert. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and the office gave no indication that her condition had worsened after she reached the hospital.
The office thanked Toledo police officers, firefighters and medical personnel for their rapid response. It also said Kaptur was grateful for the messages she had received from constituents and expected to return to a full schedule soon.
Officials had not released a full account of how the collision happened. Kaptur’s office said it was awaiting additional information from Toledo Police as the investigation continued.
13 Action News reported from the scene that the crash happened at approximately 10:45 a.m. near North Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue.
Police described the incident as a hit-skip crash. Two people were taken to an area hospital to be evaluated, and authorities said neither person’s injuries appeared life-threatening.
The local station reported that Kaptur was among the injured and was riding as a passenger. Police said the investigation remained in its early stages, with no immediate public explanation for what led to the collision.
Authorities also had not said whether the driver who left the scene had been located. That makes the unanswered police questions — who fled, why, and what caused the impact — the next major part of this developing story.

Kaptur has represented Ohio’s 9th Congressional District since January 1983. First elected in 1982, she entered the House when Ronald Reagan was president and Tip O’Neill was speaker.
U.S. House History, Art & Archives records her service as beginning with the 98th Congress, making her the longest-serving woman in the history of Congress.
The House’s official service table lists Kaptur at 43 years in office as of January 3, 2026. She surpassed Edith Nourse Rogers as the longest-serving woman in the House in 2018 and later became the longest-serving woman in all of congressional history.
Her district includes Toledo and stretches across parts of northwestern Ohio along Lake Erie. Kaptur is currently serving her 22nd term in the House and is the dean of Ohio’s congressional delegation.
The immediate news from her office was reassuring: she was conscious, communicating and expected back at work. The hit-skip investigation, however, remains open.
