There was a surge of midweek speculation after President Donald Trump reportedly switched from his new presidential jet to a previous version of Air Force One for his final leg back to the United States.
In a statement addressing the matter on Thursday, a White House source offered some insight into the act of “misdirection,” as The Hill reported:
“The new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has been fitted with high-level security protocols that ensure the safety of the President and his staff,” White House communications director Steven Cheung said in a statement.
“As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal — including distraction and misdirection — to address those threats,” he said.
ADVERTISEMENTTrump took the older, baby blue model of Air Force One when departing from the NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday to fly to the Royal Air Force Mildenhall base in the U.K.
Here’s a sampling of the online discussion the move sparked:
Unfortunately, things like this have to be done to keep our President safe from harm. What a shame that the sick people out there have made it come to this 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

Security is always job one. When you’ve got real threats on the table, a little distraction and misdirection isn't just a strategy—it’s a necessity. Glad to see them putting safety first. ✈️🇺🇸

Newser added this:
Despite Cheung’s remarks, it’s not clear whether the plane donated by Qatar was retrofitted with adequate security measures amid pressure from Trump to get it into service as soon as possible, the Times reports. The older aircraft is believed to be equipped with missile defense systems. Experts, including Pentagon officials, estimated that fully upgrading the new plane would cost around $1 billion and take two years to complete. It ended up entering service after less than a year, with officials estimating the cost at below $400 million.
Here’s what Trump said about the situation shortly after news began to spread:
"Were you aware of any credible threat by Iran against Air Force One?"@POTUS: "I have a threat all the time. I'm number one on their list, before you — but if I go, you go, right? So perhaps some of you want to change professions." 🤣 pic.twitter.com/5VlZBBySwx
