While plenty of other Republicans seem willing to circle the wagons around 84-year-old US Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) weeks into a hospitalization shrouded in mystery, President Donald Trump offered a characteristically candid answer to a reporter’s recent question on the matter.
As the Daily Caller reported:
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, the president said he had not spoken with the Kentucky Republican since his recent hospitalization. “I have no idea how he’s doing,” Trump said, according to CNN’s Alayna Treene.
ADVERTISEMENTMcConnell, 84, has not been seen or heard from publicly since he entered the hospital on June 14, and his office has declined to explain what sent him there, WHAS11 reported. The longest-serving senator in Kentucky history plans to leave Congress when his current term ends in January 2027.
His team has offered little beyond a short update released July 2. “The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” the statemetn from his office read, according to NBC News.
Several sources claimed to have spoken directly to the senator on a range of topics, though these reports have been met with some skepticism:
🇺🇸 Many of the individuals saying they spoke to Sen. McConnell yesterday, who has been hospitalized for nearly a month, said they spoke to him for "20 minutes."
Is this the "proof of life" script?

I spoke to McConnell for about 20 minutes this morning.
He said we should end the war with Iran, quit giving aid to Israel, stop spying on Americans without a warrant, and he’s really sorry about how my primary turned out.

As Yahoo News added:
After reports of Thune, Barrasso and Jennings’ conversations with McConnell, many social media users took notice of the length of the conversations.
Specifically, some emphasized Barrasso and Jennings’ discussions with McConnell lasting around 20 minutes.
ADVERTISEMENT“Am I the only one who hasn’t spoken to Mitch McConnell for 20 minutes today?” one social media user wrote on X.
Here’s some left-leaning commentary on the matter from MSNOW’s “Morning Joe”:
