New Report Claims Mitch McConnell is in Rehab: “He’s Alive. He’s Not Brain Dead.”

It’s been almost a month since Sen. Mitch McConnell was rushed to the hospital.

While many politicians and journalists claim that they’ve talked to him, that hasn’t stopped folks from speculating about the 84-year-old’s health condition.

Amid rumors that Mitch is brain dead, NewsNation reporter Jackie Koppell provided an update from an unnamed source who says otherwise:

NEW on MCCONNELL’s health:

“He’s alive. He’s not brain dead. He’s in rehab and the hospital. With his condition, he needs time to physically recover. But mentally he’s fine. The doctors want to make sure he’s okay.”

Unlikely McConnell is back at the Capitol next week although possible, the source adds.

This latest update on McConnell’s condition comes after multiple people said they had a “roughly 20-minute long” phone conversation with him earlier this week.

Always “20 minutes” for some reason…

The Senate is scheduled to return to the Capitol next week after a two-week recess.

When they come back, it's unlikely that McConnell will join them, although this source notes it is "possible."

Here's more from the NewsNation report:

Speculation has swirled about McConnell’s health since he was admitted to the hospital more than three weeks ago.

Some fellow Congressional Republicans said this week they spoke with McConnell about a variety of political topics, including national security.

Aides to McConnell have declined to release any information about his condition, fueling speculation about his prognosis and whether he will be healthy enough to be at the Capitol when the Senate returns to Washington next week after a two-week recess. McConnell, 84, is retiring at the end of his term in January.

The source with knowledge of McConnell’s health situation told NewsNation, “With his condition, he needs time to physically recover. But mentally he’s fine. The doctors want to make sure he’s okay.”

The source added it’s possible, but unlikely, McConnell could return to the Capitol next week.

McConnell is the longest-serving senator in Kentucky history. He was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and was the Republican leader from 2007 until 2024, serving as both majority and minority leader during that period. He is not running for re-election this fall.
