WATCH: English Player Suffers “Serious” Injury During Celebrations After Team’s Historic World Cup Victory

After England defeated Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic, hard-fought contest in the round of 16, English reserve Jordan Henderson was removed from the pitch on a stretcher after suffering a “serious” wrist injury during celebrations.

The team gathered to sing a rendition of “Wonderwall” by Oasis.

There was a temporary wall, which appeared roughly four feet high, set up for advertising.

When Henderson attempted to hoist himself over the barrier, he appeared to lose his grip and fell awkwardly.

ESPN shared further:

Dan Burn, an England defender, said Henderson fell over one of the advertising boards, and television pictures showed Henderson being stretchered off.

Afterward, England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Henderson had suffered a “serious” injury. “He injured his wrist, he is at the moment in the hospital,” Tuchel said. “It is a quite serious injury.

“It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure which is going on. I just did the [media duties] and the doc told me he’s in the hospital.”

Henderson will stay in Mexico City on Sunday night with an England staff member while the rest of the England squad flies back to the team’s training base in Kansas City, Missouri.

Henderson became the first England men’s player to play at four World Cups when he came on against Panama in their final group stage match.

“Jordan Henderson is set to play no further part in the World Cup as he needs surgery on the freak wrist injury he suffered in England’s last 16 victory over Mexico,” The Athletic stated.

“We are all with you, Hendo ❤️,” Brentford FC wrote.

NBC News noted:

The Brentford midfielder Henderson was taken off the pitch on a stretcher, apparently ending a World Cup run in which he played sparingly but still managed to put himself center stage.

Despite not playing in the Mexico match, he was booked for a yellow card in the 98th minute. Henderson, wearing his warmup vest, appeared to insert himself into a touchline clash between teammate Jude Bellingham and Mexico’s Johan Vasquez.

England will play Norway in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Miami, Florida.
