WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham Reacts To White House Post Using Her Finger-Pointing Meme

After a string of left-leaning celebrities have made a show of demanding that they not be associated with President Donald Trump in any way, WNBA player Sophie Cunningham is offering a refreshing change of pace.

Cunningham has taken on the role of standing up for her superstar teammate Caitlin Clark, who has been exposed to flagrant fouls and other targeted behavior from others in the league.

And after one incident last month, Cunningham pointed out the offender in what has since become a widely shared social media meme.

Among the many places it has appeared in the days since was on the White House’s feed:

Potentially upsetting some in the notoriously woke WNBA’s fanbase, Cunningham didn’t denounce the Trump administration’s post.

As Fox News reported:

Cunningham shared her thoughts on the White House’s post while speaking to reporters on Friday.

“I think everyone around the world is posting it,” Cunningham said when asked about the White House’s post.

“Every company has done it. So I don’t really think twice about it. I just think they’re another group posting about it.”

Cunningham said on her podcast that her technical foul she got for the pointing gesture during the game against the Mercury was “the weakest thing I’ve ever seen in my life” and explaining that she “didn’t say a word” while “all I was doing was literally pointing.”

Here’s a sampling of the attention the moment has received elsewhere on the platform:

MSN reported on Cunningham’s own comments about what led up to the viral finger point:

Cunningham explained on her ‘Show Me Something’ podcast that the viral moment began when she questioned referees about Caitlin Clark’s technical foul and asked why DeWanna Bonner wasn’t also penalized. Bonner took issue with being pointed at, prompting Cunningham to continue silently pointing in her direction. She later called it the ‘stupidest’ thing she had ever done, noting it clearly irritated Bonner and drew widespread online attention.

DB was the one that really did something extra and then Caitlin got the tech. So, I walked out there and I was really talking to the ref… I was like, ‘I know Caitlin got a tech, but why she didn’t get one?’ Because if Caitlin’s gonna get one, then she should get one. It shouldn’t be one or the other. She was like, ‘Don’t you point at me.’ I was like, ‘Oh, shouldn’t have said that.’ And I didn’t say a word. So stupid, like that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. Everyone was like, ‘That is so dumb.’ I think it’s dumb, but it was pissing her off, and I couldn’t help myself. She was losing her sh-t and all I was doing was literally pointing.

Here’s a longer clip of her discussing the incident:
