REPORT: U.S. & Iran Agree to Halt Strikes, Hold Talks in Qatar This Week

After exchanging military strikes back and forth over the weekend, efforts are underway to re-establish the peace deal between U.S. and Iran.

Reportedly, both the U.S. and Iran have agreed to halt all attacks, for now.

New talks are scheduled for sometime this week in Qatar.

Here’s the latest update on the situation:

BREAKING: The US and Iran have agreed to HALT strikes on each other, with plans to meet on Tuesday in Qatar to address concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, per Axios

It’s unclear who from the US delegation will be sent over for negotiations, but they’d have to leave relatively soon in order to make it by Tuesday.

As you probably know, the U.S. secured a ceasefire with Iran a little over a week ago.

But, they broke it over the weekend.

This new development originates from Axios, which reported:

The U.S. and Iran agreed to stop attacking each other, according to a senior U.S. official, as the two sides plan to meet Tuesday in Qatar’s capital to work out their dispute over the Strait of Hormuz.

Why it matters: The ceasefire is barely 11 days old and already on shaky ground with renewed strikes by both sides and President Trump’s threat to restart the war and “complete the job.”

  • The renewed fighting was sparked by competing interpretations of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the war — especially its terms on the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest: “We decided to stop all the kinetic activity,” a senior U.S. official tells Axios, using the military’s term for strikes and other attacks.

  • A second U.S. official tells Axios both sides will stand down “for now” and that “vessels can move freely” as technical talks are set to continue.
  • Both U.S. officials and a third source with knowledge confirmed Tuesday’s planned meeting.

Reuters confirmed the report and provided additional information:

Iran and the United States agreed to halt recent hostilities in the Gulf and renew talks regarding their dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. official said on Sunday, raising ‌hopes of saving an interim peace deal that was under pressure from days of tit-for-tat strikes.

“Technical talks are slated to continue on all areas of the MOU. Both sides will stand down for now and vessels can move freely,” the official said, referring to the 14-point memorandum of understanding that was agreed on June 17 under which the strait would be re-opened for traffic.

On Friday, Iran broke the ceasefire by launching a drone attack at a cargo ship on the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, the U.S. hit back at several drone storage and radar sites, which prompted Iran to escalate the situation.

As promised, the U.S. then returned violence with violence, again.

What do you think?

Is there any hope of saving the peace deal? Or, should President Trump move to finish the job?..
