NEW: Louis Erebia, 56, was killed by a convicted felon who was on probation after he and a family friend located his son truck that had been stolen during an armed carjacking in Houston.
The suspect, London Hogan Sr., 37, a repeat offender who was on probation for assault, has been charged with murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and a second count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Erebia’s son was robbed at a gas station while filling up his truck.
So, as a good father would do, Erebia recruited a friend and they both used GPS tracking to chase down the criminal.
Sadly, it ended the worst way possible.
They ended up crashing into the stolen truck driven by Hogan Jr., who then took out a gun and started shooting at them.
KHOU 11 reported further:
Investigators say the case began Saturday afternoon when a man was carjacked at gunpoint near Tidwell Road and John Ralston Road in northeast Harris County.
ADVERTISEMENTThe stolen truck had a GPS tracker, and the owner contacted his father, Erebia, for help locating it. A 24-year-old family friend also joined the search.
Authorities said the truck was later found at a gas station near Airline Drive and the North Loop. A confrontation led to a crash, and Erebia and the younger man chased the suspects on foot.
That’s when, investigators said, one of the suspects opened fire.
The 24-year-old was shot in the back but survived. Erebia was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Erebia’s family members describe him as a hero who died protecting the ones he loved most.
WFAA shared a statement from the grieving family:
Erebia’s family will join Crime Stoppers of Houston for a news conference Monday morning at the organization’s headquarters.
Victim advocate April Aguirre and members of Erebia’s family are expected to make a public plea for information and justice in the case.
In a statement released ahead of the news conference, the family described Erebia as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and community leader.
“Louis was 56 years old. He was a devoted husband of 22 years, a father of five, and a grandfather of three,” the family said.
The family said Erebia spent years volunteering with North Shore Little League, serving at The River church and supporting activities throughout Galena Park ISD, where his wife serves as a trustee.
“To those who knew him, he was much more than a victim in a news story — he was the kind of man this world desperately needs more of,” the family said.
The statement also addressed Erebia’s decision to pursue the suspects after the truck was located.
“When his son called in a panic after being robbed at gunpoint, Louis did what he had always done — he ran toward the people he loved,” the family said.
The family said Erebia was trying to protect the younger man who remained in the parking lot when shots were fired.
“In his final moments, he shielded that young man and paid the ultimate price,” the statement said. “He spent his last minute on this earth exactly as he spent his life — protecting others, putting others first, and fighting for the people he loved.”
The family described Erebia as hardworking, humble and always willing to help others.
ADVERTISEMENT“He never held grudges, never met a stranger and had a way of lighting up every room he entered,” the statement said.
Erebia’s family is calling for those responsible to face the full consequences of their actions.
“We are asking our community to stand with us and demand justice,” the family said. “We do not want watered-down sentences, lenient treatment or easy bail.”
