HORRIFIC: Elderly Great-Grandmother Killed in Random Stabbing on Atlanta Train

(WARNING: this article contains GRAPHIC footage. I’ll give you another warning down below.)

In a chilling case eerily similar to the tragic murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska last year, an elderly woman was stabbed to death on a MARTA train in Atlanta, GA over the weekend.

66-year-old Margaret Swan was viciously attacked, apparently at random, by a homeless man named John Elijah Matthews.

She was stabbed a total of 18-20 times after her throat was cut by the attacker.

Even worse, despite Margaret’s screams, nobody came to help her. The other passengers all just ignored the horrors happening right before their eyes.

This local news clip provided further coverage:

OH. MY. GOSH!!!

It has been revealed that the woman who was st*bbed 18-20 TIMES on the Atlanta train, 66-yr-old Margaret Swan…

…DID NOT RECEIVE ANY HELP AT ALL FROM FELLOW TRAIN PASSENGERS WHILE SHE BLED OUT ON THE FLOOR OF THE TRAIN

“She was screaming for help and nobody was helping her…”

Margaret was a mother of 3, grandmother of 5 and great-grandmother of 4.

According to CCTV footage reviewed by police, John Elijah Matthews, a homeless Black man, walked up to the Margaret and slit her throat within seconds.

Margaret screamed and tried to escape, but the suspect held her down and st*bbed her another 18 times before leaving her dead on the ground in a large pool of her own blood.

Fellow passengers on the train did nothing to try and help her as she screamed.

Absolutely horrifying.

Margaret Swan’s killer John Elijah Matthews has been arrested and charged with murder.

Here’s his mugshot:

A 66-year-old Atlanta woman sat alone on a MARTA train Saturday morning. Nineteen seconds after a man allegedly walked up and stood beside her, he pulled a knife and slit her throat.

Margaret Swan never made it off that train alive.

John Elijah Matthews, 25, now faces a murder charge after CCTV captured the entire attack — from approach to the moment he stepped off at Oakland City Station with the knife still in hand.

Surveillance footage captured the entire, gruesome stabbing.

Fox 5 Atlanta detailed:

Security footage shows Swan sitting completely alone inside MARTA train car 134 around 11:25 a.m. on Saturday, according to an arrest warrant.

The warrant states Matthews walked up to stand near her right side, pulled a knife out of his front pants pocket, grabbed Swan by her head, and cut her throat.

Swan screamed and attempted to rise from her seat before Matthews grabbed her right arm and stabbed her roughly 18 to 20 times in an unprovoked attack.

Matthews then threw Swan to the floor and stood beside her until the northbound train pulled into the Oakland City Station at approximately 11:27 a.m.

After the train stopped, Matthews walked out of the train car onto the north end of the station platform holding the knife in his right hand.

At 11:28 a.m., surveillance video captured MARTA police officers rushing to intercept and arrest Matthews on the platform with their weapons drawn. Matthews complied with all verbal instructions given by the arresting units, and the knife was found lying right next to him.

A patrolling officer rushed to the train car at 11:30 a.m. after a large crowd of passengers reported that a man wearing an orange shirt had stabbed a woman.

The responding officer found Swan lying motionless in a large pool of blood and attempted life-saving measures until emergency medics arrived.

Swan ultimately died at the scene and was pronounced deceased by the Fulton County Medical Examiner at 2 p.m.

Authorities immediately evacuated the station, suspended rail service until just before 3 p.m., and used shuttle buses to transport 80 to 100 stranded passengers to their destinations.

In addition to criminal charges, Matthews is permanently banned from all MARTA property.

Some VERY GRAPHIC footage is going viral online from the aftermath of the attack.

If you want to see it, here it is (again, WARNING: EXTREMELY GRAPHIC):

Margaret Swan leaves behind several children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Her family shared some heartbreaking remarks to 11 Alive:

Now, her family is left mourning the loss of a woman they describe as the foundation of their family.

“My mom was the rock of her family,”Sams explained.

She added, “There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family because her family was her everything.”

Swan leaves behind three children — two daughters and a son — as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

To those who knew her, she was gentle, dependable and always willing to help others.

“She wouldn’t hurt anyone,” Sams said. “She was so sweet.”

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Swan spent more than 50 years in Georgia. Much of her working life was dedicated to caring for children. She worked in daycares before retiring.

Her daughter said Swan remained active and independent, regularly using MARTA to travel throughout the city.

“She took the train all the time,” Sams said.

According to arrest warrants obtained by 11Alive, investigators allege Matthews boarded the train and attacked Swan without provocation. Witnesses and surveillance footage helped MARTA police quickly identify and arrest him after the attack.

Sams believes her mother never had a chance to react.

“You know everyone says to protect themselves, but my mom had protection on her,” she said. “It was an act out of nowhere. She didn’t have time to even try to protect herself.”

Swan carried a knife, her daughter confirmed, but the attack unfolded so suddenly that she was unable to defend herself.

The family is also grappling with another painful reality.

“Everybody watched it and nobody helped her,” Sams said.

As they mourn, the family is raising questions about safety and security across the transit system.

“We can tell women all the time to be aware of their surroundings, but this is negligence, this is security negligence,” Sams said. “Because there was not security. No one is securing the trains.”

She believes a stronger police presence could have prevented the attack.

“If the police were on the train, this wouldn’t have happened,” she said. “It shouldn’t be certain stations have the police patrolling. It should be all stations have the police patrolling.”

MARTA has called the killing a senseless act of violence and said its thoughts are with Swan’s loved ones and others who witnessed the attack.

For Swan’s family, however, the focus remains on the woman they lost.

“He didn’t just take away a mom,” Sams said. “My children’s grandmother was taken away.”

As news of the attack spread across Atlanta, relatives said they wanted the public to know who Swan was beyond the headlines. She was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose life revolved around family.

This isn’t the first stabbing to take place in recent weeks on the Atlanta public transit system.

Another stabbing happened only roughly two weeks ago, but the victim of that incident survived.

But, another fatal stabbing took place on one of the trains earlier this year.

WRDW noted:

Swan’s death marks the second homicide connected to the Oakland City MARTA station since late April.

MARTA has not conducted on-camera interviews since Saturday’s incident. In a statement, a MARTA spokesperson said the agency is mourning alongside Swan’s loved ones.

“This was a senseless and heartbreaking loss. We mourn with Margaret Swan’s loved ones and extend our deepest sympathies during this incredibly difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

The agency noted that it employs a dedicated police force of 280 sworn officers to help protect riders.

“Every day, thousands of MARTA employees, including a dedicated police force of 280 sworn officers, go to work with one goal — to protect our riders,” the spokesperson said.

Violence like this has no place in our cities.

For crying out loud, great-grandmothers shouldn’t have to be scared to take public transit because they might get stabbed to death by a deranged homeless person!

It’s completely unacceptable.
