These charges seem extremely light, considering the circumstances.
The grandson of Mike Krzyzewski was charged with DWI following a crash that killed a 15-year-old.
According to authorities, Joseph Savarino was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol when he struck and killed a teen riding an e-bike.
People reported more on the tragic accident and the legal implications Savarino faces:
The grandson of legendary college basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has been charged with a DWI after a fatal incident over the weekend left a 15-year-old boy dead.
Joseph Savarino, whose mother is Kryzewski’s daughter Debbie, is facing a charge of driving while impaired after police said his SUV struck and killed a 15-year-old boy riding an e-bike at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane in Durham, N.C., on Saturday, April 18, according to local news stations WRAL, NBC affiliate WXII12 and CBS affiliate WNCN.
The outlets reported that records reveal Savarino’s breathalyzer test showed a 0.11 blood alcohol content when police administered the test around 12:45 a.m. local time on on Sunday, April 19. Savarino reportedly admitted to police that he had been drinking earlier before operating the vehicle, according to court records obtained by WNCN.
“The juvenile was struck by the vehicle,” the Durham Police Department said in a news release, per WNCN, and the boy died at the scene, according to WNCN and WRAL.
Savarino’s bond is reportedly set at $100,000, the outlets reported, and Judge Kevin Jones required Savarino to surrender his driver’s license on Monday, April 20.
