Stephen Cloobeck, the billionaire benefactor who severed ties with Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) after recent allegations of sexual misconduct.
Not only did Cloobeck publicly disavow Swalwell, who has since announced his resignation from Congress and the suspension of his gubernatorial bid, but he also booted the disgraced lawmaker from his California mansion.
After witnessing the ordeal, the Diamond Resorts founder determined that the problem goes deeper than Swalwell.
Fox News reported on Cloobeck’s latest statement:
“I am no longer supporting Eric. F—ing tell everyone I’m a libertarian. F— you, Democrat Party. I’m a libertarian now,” Cloobeck told the Post.
“I am now a Republican,” he added to Fox 11 LA.
He confirmed Swalwell would no longer be welcome at his California residence.
“I have a lot of people who stay at my house. I built a gorgeous place, my dream home, I relish it, and I’m a very generous man. I’m very thoughtful and I’m very kind,” Cloobeck said.
Cloobeck has donated to Swalwell’s primary and general campaigns, contributing $23,400 from 2017 to 2023. He has also given the Democratic congressman gifts, including a $39,900 flight to Nice, France, according to congressional disclosures.
Cloobeck was just one in a chorus of voices contributing to Swalwell’s rapid fall from grace over the past several days.
Law professor Jonathan Turley succinctly broke down the series of events:
In one week, Eric Swalwell was forced to drop out of the California race, put under criminal investigation in New York, and is the subject of a bipartisan expulsion effort. He was even kicked out of the home of a billionaire who was letting him crash. However, that is not all…

…Swalwell is unlikely to avoid expulsion, but he may not have his law degree to fall back on. If these rape and sexual harassment claims are established, he is likely to face disbarment demands. Even his prior boosters at MS NOW and CNN are unlikely to offer him a media deal…

…I will be discussing Swalwell on America Reports today. However, the collapse of Swalwell is accelerating with the opening of what appears to be an expedited House Ethics Committee investigation.

…I have been one of Swalwell's most persistent critics through the years. He has always been shielded by the Democratic establishment and the media. Now, he is persona non grata without a friend in the world.

CBS News is among the media outlets reporting exclusive details from Swalwell’s increasing number of accusers:
“He was pushed into a corner, essentially, because they were planning to expel him … so I think he did that to save face a little,” Ally Sammarco, whose accusations were first detailed in a CNN report, told CBS News. “But I also felt very vindicated that he realized it was over for him.”
Annika Albrecht, who is publicly coming forward as an accuser for the first time, said, “For me, justice won’t be until he can’t ever harm a woman ever again, and he has faced the consequences for the women that he has harmed.”
Swalwell’s political ambitions have unraveled in recent days as he’s been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, including allegations of sexual assault and sending unsolicited explicit messages and nude photos. The Democratic congressman announced Monday that he will be resigning from Congress, one day after he said he was dropping out of the California gubernatorial race.
Swalwell has vowed to fight what he called the “false allegations” and has claimed they were politically motivated to hurt his gubernatorial bid.
