Senator Mike Lee is riding high after a major breakthrough on the SAVE America Act this week. After weeks of mounting pressure on Senate leadership, Lee announced that a hybrid “talking filibuster” strategy will force Democrats to take the floor and defend their opposition to voter ID legislation that an overwhelming majority of Americans support.
The development marks a significant shift in how the Senate will approach this contentious legislation. For months, conservative activists have pushed for Senate Majority Leader John Thune to take bolder action on election integrity. Now, it appears those efforts are paying off as Thune’s office has worked closely with Lee to craft a procedure that could finally bring the SAVE America Act to a vote.
From The Gateway Pundit:
“Lee confirmed the breakthrough in a new video clip: a HYBRID form of the talking filibuster is now set to be implemented. That means Democrats will be FORCED to take the floor and defend their radical anti-voter-ID agenda, possibly for HOURS or even DAYS, against a bill that 85% of the American people support.”

“Sen. Mike Lee: ‘Okay, important update on the Save America Act and the effort to get it passed. Look, I am guardedly optimistic. We’ve turned kind of a corner over the last few days. There’s been some uncertainty about exactly what procedure we will and will not be using. In the end, we’ve been working closely with Leader Thune and his staff, and they’ve been great to work with. What we’re coming up with is something that I think is best described as a hybrid version of the talking filibuster. But look, let’s not get mired down in nomenclature. What matters far more than what we call it is what we do with it. We’re going to bring it to the floor. We’re going to debate it for an extended period of time before filing cloture. And in my view—at least, I don’t want to speak for anyone else—this bill needs to remain on the Senate floor before we file cloture for as long as it takes to get it done.'”

The bill, which passed the House last week, would require photo ID to vote in federal elections, proof of citizenship to register, and mandate that states maintain clean voter rolls. These requirements have been championed by election integrity advocates for years, but have faced fierce opposition from Democrats who claim they amount to voter suppression.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been particularly vocal in his criticism, going so far as to label the legislation “Jim Crow 2.0.” Lee wasted no time firing back at those accusations.
From Fox News:
“‘It’s paranoid fantasy,’ Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, told Fox News Digital. ‘These are absurd arguments. They should be ashamed to make them.’ Lee was responding to comments from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who has doubled down on his claim that the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act is ‘Jim Crow 2.0.'”
“Lee argued that providing identification or proof of citizenship is routine in everyday life — whether undergoing a background check to buy a firearm or filling out tax forms when starting a new job. ‘By their logic, it’s Jim Crow to require somebody to establish citizenship before taking a job with a new employer, and that’s insane,’ Lee said. ‘And so then they argue here, well, voting is so fundamental, and we have constitutional protections protecting our right to vote,’ he continued. ‘Well, we’ve got constitutional protections protecting our right to bear arms, and yet that doesn’t cause us to dispense with proving who you are and your eligibility to buy a gun. This has just been insane.'”

This is high-stakes legislation
Pass it and we save the republic
Don’t pass it and we roll the dice

The breakthrough comes as Republicans have secured the 50 votes needed to move the bill through its first key procedural hurdle. President Trump has backed the legislation and suggested he would issue an executive order if Congress fails to act. But Lee emphasized that passing the actual law is critical for long-term election integrity.
What’s your verdict?Americans overwhelmingly support voter ID laws, with 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans favoring photo ID requirements for voting.
