Democrat Lawmaker RESIGNS After Being Arrested On Child S*x Crimes

Why did it take him so long to resign?

A democrat state lawmaker from North Carolina has resigned three weeks after being charged with child sex crimes.

Rep. Cecil Brockman on Friday announced he would be stepping as a representative after being charged with two counts of statutory sexual offense with a child.

The New York Post reported more on Brockman’s decision to step down:

A North Carolina state lawmaker has resigned from his legislative seat after the announcement of a committee to investigate his alleged sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old, according to authorities.

Rep. Cecil Brockman (D-Guilford) sent a letter to the House clerk’s office on Friday, announcing he would be resigning effective immediately after mounting pressure from bipartisan leaders, including Democratic Gov. Josh Stein, to step down.

The state lawmaker was arrested on Oct. 8 and charged with two counts of statutory sexual offense with a child and taking indecent liberties for an incident involving a 15-year-old, according to court records obtained by The Post.

Brockman, 41, who had served in the House since 2015, wrote that he needed to focus on his defense given the grave allegations against him.

“As a result, I am currently unable to fulfill my duty and service to my constituents,” Brockman said.

Democratic officials in Brockman’s Guilford County district will now choose someone to complete his two-year term through the end of 2026,” Brockman wrote in a statement.

Republican House Speaker Destin Hall announced earlier Friday that there would be a bipartisan House committee “to investigate the charges and recommend expulsion if necessary” from the chamber, a Hall news release said.

Democratic officials in Brockman’s Guilford County district will now select someone to complete his two-year term through the end of 2026.

WXII reported more on Brockman’s resignation and the Democrat leaders in North Carolina’s response:

I am currently facing criminal charges brought against me in Guilford County. Due to the seriousness of these accusations, I need to focus on my defense of these allegations. As a result, I am unable to fulfill my duty and service to my constituents in Guilford County. As a result, I am resigning my position from the NC House of Representatives effective immediately.

North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall issued the following statement on Brockman’s resignation:

“Rep. Brockman’s decision to resign is the right thing to do for his constituents and for the North Carolina House of Representatives. His departure spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter.”

Democrats in Brockman’s district will need to meet and select his replacement.

Under North Carolina law, Gov. Stein will have one week to appoint the nominee to the seat to serve out the remainder of Brockman’s term.
