UPDATE: No Survivors Reported From Explosion That Occurred At Military Explosives Plant In Tennessee

Bad news has surfaced from Tennessee.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis has reported there are no survivors from the explosion that occurred at a military explosives facility on Tennessee.

Davis further reported authorities are no longer looking for survivors but instead are searching for DNA remains.

There are currently 18 reported dead from the explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems, a military explosives plant.

A powerful explosion that ripped through a military explosives facility in Tennessee left no survivors, officials said at a press conference Saturday.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said officials were working on the assumption that all of the people at the site were dead.

“We’re only working remains,” he said, adding that teams will enter to start conducting a rapid DNA search.

The explosion on Friday morning left multiple people dead and 18 others missing, officials said. Video from the scene showed damaged vehicles and charred debris scattered around the area.

The explosion took place at Accurate Energetic Systems, a military explosives plant, around 7:45 a.m. Central time on Friday morning, Humphrey County Sheriff Chris Davis said during an afternoon news conference. The blast occurred in one of the eight buildings on the campus.

Davis said there were 18 people unaccounted for and that there were fatalities. Earlier officials said 19 people were missing but revised the number on Saturday, saying a person who was initially believed to be on site was located safely at home. Davis did not specify how many people had died. “Four or five” people were taken to the hospital, Davis said, but he added that he and his team had been focused on the scene and might not have the most up-to-date numbers.

There were no survivors in the blast that obliterated part of an explosives factory in rural Tennessee, authorities said on Saturday.

The families of 18 people had been waiting anxiously on Saturday as their loved ones had been feared dead since explosions ripped through the plant near McEwen in western Tennessee early on Friday. The initial toll had been believed to be 19 people but that figure was later revised.

The Humphreys county sheriff, Chris Davis, spoke to the public and media early on Saturday afternoon and revealed that authorities were assuming that anybody who was inside the building that exploded the day before was dead.

Davis said the tragedy was even “more devastating” than had been thought. In the close-knit community, he and other members of law enforcement and many in the community know people who were victims of the disaster.

The blast was felt for miles as it leveled a building at the 1,300-acre headquarters of Accurate Energetic Systems (AES), which is located in the tiny community of Bucksnort, just south of McEwen, about an hour’s drive west of Nashville.

“More than 300 people have been through almost every square inch of this facility, and at this time, we’ve recovered no survivors,” an emotional Davis told reporters early on Saturday afternoon. “It’s a great loss to our communities.”
