The president of Israel just delivered a warning that New York City cannot dismiss as foreign political commentary.
President Herzog says Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rhetoric is endangering the people he was elected to protect.
His words were blunt.
Herzog accused Mamdani of spreading hate and antisemitism while denying the Jewish people’s right to national self-determination.
Then he brought the consequences home to New York.
Fox News posted the central portion of Herzog’s warning:

The warning comes after an Orthodox Jewish man was stabbed in Manhattan and amid growing fear about antisemitic violence in the city with the largest Jewish population outside Israel.
Herzog did not accuse Mamdani of personally ordering or carrying out an attack.
He made a different argument: when a mayor repeatedly brands Israel and its elected leaders with the language of genocide and criminality, that rhetoric can make an already-dangerous atmosphere worse.
The Fox News interview took place at Herzog’s official residence in Jerusalem. Herzog said Mamdani does not respect Israel’s right to exist as the national home of the Jewish people and warned that the mayor could inflict damage on New York that outlasts his administration.
His rebuke followed a July 21 video in which Mamdani called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal and accused him of directing genocide against Palestinians.
Herzog said such rhetoric was unacceptable from the leader of a city that is deeply connected to Israel and Jewish life.
The Israeli president also used the interview to praise President Trump. He credited the president with putting his foot down, negotiating effectively and helping secure the return of 255 hostages held by Hamas after the October 7 massacre.
Herzog pointed to President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the relocation of the U.S. Embassy and recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights as proof that the alliance rests on action rather than political ceremony.
He called the relationship between America and Israel biblical and prophetic, while warning that Iran’s terror network, missiles, nuclear ambitions and threats to the Strait of Hormuz remain dangers to the United States as well as Israel.
Fox News World highlighted the other side of Herzog’s interview—his praise for President Trump’s results and his appeal to young Americans:

Mamdani’s defenders will say that condemning Israel is not the same as attacking Jewish New Yorkers.
In a narrow legal sense, they are correct.
Americans have every right to criticize any foreign government, including Israel’s. Holding office does not erase Mamdani’s First Amendment rights.
Political leaders also carry a duty that ordinary activists do not.
They set the moral temperature of the city they govern.
They decide which prejudices receive immediate condemnation, which are explained away and which communities are told that their fear is merely political theater.
Mamdani’s removal of the city’s use of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, his repeated genocide accusations and his decision to skip the Israel Day Parade have all deepened that distrust.
Those choices do not prove responsibility for any individual hate crime.
They do show why many Jewish residents believe City Hall has become hostile to their concerns.
A mayor who expects Jewish New Yorkers to trust him cannot answer that distrust only by insisting that his criticism is aimed at a government thousands of miles away.

Herzog’s warning also exposes the contrast between Mamdani and President Trump.
Mamdani has spent his political capital threatening Israel’s prime minister and describing the Jewish state in the language of international criminal prosecution.
President Trump used American power to move hostages home, strengthen Israel’s security and force Hamas toward disarmament.
One approach turns Israel into a political target.
The other treats a democratic ally as an ally.
New York’s Jewish residents do not need every mayoral statement dictated by Jerusalem.
They do need a mayor who understands that antisemitism does not remain safely confined to slogans, videos and protest signs.
It reaches sidewalks, synagogues, schools and subway cars.
President Herzog has now warned Mamdani publicly.
The next responsibility belongs to City Hall.
