Florida Officially Dedicates “Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway” — First in the Nation!

Lake County, Florida just became the first in the nation to formally dedicate a highway to Charlie Kirk’s legacy.

The name change was approved a little over a week ago, and today, the signs went up declaring Schofield Road as “Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced:

Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway has been approved by the Lake County Commission.

The road is a section of Wellness Way from US 27 to the Orange County line.

Lake County’s dedication of the highway represents the first county to memorialize Kirk in the aftermath of his assassination.

County Commissioner Anthony Sabatini, who led the effort to memorialize the highway in Charlie Kirk’s honor, also posted:

The debate over naming the road after Charlie Kirk was heated.

However, ultimately, the Lake County Commission’s vote was unanimous, with every member voting ‘yes.’

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported:

On Sept. 23, the Lake County Commission unanimously voted to designate Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway. County commissioner and former Florida legislator Anthony Sabatini, who spearheaded the resolution, posted a picture Oct. 1.

“IT’S OFFICIAL—Our Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway signs are up!” Sabatini posted to Facebook. “Lake County, FL is now the 1st local government in the nation to name a road after the great Charlie Kirk—every city & county in America should follow our lead.”

The approval came after about 2½ hours of contentious and occasionally shouted debate over naming a street after such a polarizing figure.

One resident asked if it would be more appropriate to name a street after “someone who fought to serve and protect us, a true Lake County resident and brave American hero,” referencing Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Bradley Link. Link was gunned down in an ambush during a Eustis firefight in August.

“How dare you use that deputy’s name for your petty bulls–t political argument! How dare you!” Sabatini said, calling the speaker a “disgusting person.”

Many other Florida counties – including Clearwater, Hernando County, Melbourne, Miami-Dade County, Pensacola, and St. Lucie — have considered re-naming a road to honor Charlie Kirk.

But, no others have been officially approved so far.

What do you think?

Should more counties follow in the footsteps of Lake County and dedicate a road or other landmark to Charlie Kirk?
