A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer sustained significant injuries while attempting to conduct an immigration arrest in Chicago.
An ICE spokesperson said that officers were conducting a vehicle stop as part of a “targeted law enforcement activity.”
The suspect being stopped reportedly resisted and drove his vehicle into the officers arresting him, dragging one agent with his car.
“This morning, while carrying out an enforcement operation targeting a criminal illegal alien, the alien resisted arrest, attempted to flee the scene and dragged a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer a significant distance with his car,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement.
“The officer sustained multiple injuries and is in stable condition. The illegal alien was pronounced dead,” the statement continued.

NBC News has more:
The Department of Homeland Security identified the driver who was killed as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez. DHS said in a statement that he was the “target of the enforcement operation” and that he came to the United States “at an unknown date and time.”
DHS accused Villegas-Gonzalez of having “a history of reckless driving.”
The Federal Bureau of Investigations said it was assisting law enforcement officers in response to the incident, NBC Chicago reported.
Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois said in a social media post that he is “aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park.”
“This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability,” Pritzker said.
“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
“Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those being apprehended,” she added.
“I’m told by a senior ICE source that the officer suffered lacerations and significant leg injuries but is expected to be okay,” Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin said.

Reuters noted:
The Trump administration said on Monday that it launched an immigration enforcement action in Chicago and other parts of Illinois called “Operation Midway Blitz.”
Lilian Jimenez, a state representative for Illinois’ 4th district in Chicago, criticized ICE for the death in Franklin Park, a Chicago suburb.
“This endangers all of our community for ICE to operate in this manner,” she said. “Now we have seen the ultimate, horrific circumstances that we were all worried about. They have taken away the life of our community member.”
