Earlier the WLT Report reported former Providence Municipal Court judge Frank Caprio, who starred in the hit reality court show “Caught in Providence”, called for his fans to pray for him as he faced health battles.
In a post on Facebook, Caprio called for prayers after he revealed he had faced a setback in his battle with pancreatic cancer.
Well, now it’s been reported, America’s kindest judge has died at the age of 88.

Reality TV star and Providence, R.I., municipal judge Frank Caprio has died at age 88.
Caprio, who was known for his show Caught in Providence, which ran between 2018 and 2020 and received multiple Daytime Emmy Award nominations, died “peacefully” following a “long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer,” according to a statement posted to his Instagram account on Aug. 20.
“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,” read the caption of the post. “His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”
“He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend,” the statement continued. “His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired. In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”
Caprio was known for the way he presided over his courtroom with compassion, causing clips from his show to go viral on TikTok in recent years and earning him the title of “Nicest Judge in the World.”

WPRI provided a bio of Caprio’s life:
Caprio grew up on Federal Hill in Providence and is the second of three sons. While he was younger, he shined shoes, delivered newspapers, and worked on a milk truck, following his parents’ example of “working hard to better the lives of those around him,” his website reads.
He graduated from Central High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Providence College. After graduating, he stayed in the capital city and began teaching American Government at Hope High School.
While teaching, he attended night school at the Suffolk University School of Law in Boston, which led to his joining the legal profession.
He was elected judge in 1985 and became famous for his television series “Caught in Providence,” which was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 2021.
Caprio often went viral on social media for dismissing tickets from residents who appeared on the show and shared their personal stories.
He also served 10 years as chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, which is the governing body for the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and Community College of Rhode Island.
ADVERTISEMENTAt Suffolk University School of Law, Caprio founded the Antonio “Tup” Caprio Scholarship Fund. It’s named after his father and is awarded to Rhode Island students committed to improving access to legal services in underserved neighborhoods.
He has also established scholarships in his father’s name at Providence College and Central High School.
Caprio announced his retirement from the Providence Municipal Court in January 2023 after nearly 40 years on the bench.
Following his retirement, Providence renamed its municipal courtroom after Caprio in October 2023.

Speaking from a hospital bed, Caprio, 88, asked for prayers in a video posted to Facebook.

Caprio’s update comes after what many believed was the closing of his cancer chapter. In June 2024, he announced he had completed chemotherapy and radiation treatments for pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis he described as “crushing.” Surrounded by loved ones at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, Caprio rang the “bell of healing,” marking the end of a grueling six-month journey through chemo and five sessions of radiation.
Just weeks later, in July 2024, Caprio posted a video to fans showing himself doing push-ups, proudly captioned “I’M BACK.” It was a symbol of strength, recovery, and the optimism that he carried with him into remission.
While details about his current condition remain limited, one thing is certain: Frank Caprio continues to face each battle with strong belief in the power of prayer.
