Texas Democrat Finally Apologizes For Comparing GOP Redistricting To The Holocaust

While so-called gerrymandering is a bipartisan pastime dating back generations, it’s only a problem among Democrats when Republicans do it.

That fact has been on full display as Democratic lawmakers across Texas abscond to other states in opposition to redistricting being proposed by GOP officials.

And one of those individuals, state Rep. Jolanda Jones, had a particularly ill-advised take on the matter, as the Daily Caller reported:

Fired CNN host Don Lemon nodded along Tuesday as Democratic Texas state Rep. Jolanda Jones compared congressional redistricting to the Holocaust.

Jones is among the over 50 Democrat state lawmakers who broke quorum by dodging the Monday vote on redistricting by fleeing to blue states like Illinois and New York. The left-wing lawmaker claimed with a straight face on Lemon’s podcast, “The Don Lemon Show,” that black Americans may have the same fate as Jews during the Holocaust if her colleagues do not protect them from being “targeted” by Republicans.

“I will liken this to the Holocaust,” Jones said. “People are like ‘well, how did the Holocaust happen? How is somebody in the position to kill all of them people?’ Well, good people remain silent or good people didn’t realize that what happens to them can very soon happen to me or somebody I love. So even if you made it, you have an obligation to help people who can’t, because God forbid they end up targeting you and your family.”

Lemon nodded in agreement as Jones made this comparison.

The backlash was quick and severe:

Whether she finally thought better of her offensive comments or simply wanted to save face in the wake of such opprobrium, Jones later apologized for her remarks, per Fox News:

“I made a statement on ‘The Don Lemon Show’ comparing Trump’s attempt to disenfranchise Black and Brown people to the Holocaust. That was a mistake, and I apologize for it. Trump is coming for my community, and I get emotional about it and make strong statements. But that was going too far, and I retract that comparison,” the statement read.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, criticized Jones’ original comments.

“Fleeing Texas House Democrats continue to beclown themselves through this desperate, anti-democratic stunt. Unlike these radicals, Governor Abbott refuses to abandon Texans. If the House Democrats who deserted Texans were serious about delivering results, they would come back to the Texas Capitol and do the job voters elected them to do,” Mahaleris told Fox News Digital.
