Andrew Cuomo Expected To Make BIG Announcement Regarding NYC Mayoral Election

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce he will remain in the New York City mayoral election as an independent candidate.

Cuomo has weighed his decision to remain in the race since his defeat to Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary.

Sources told The New York Times Cuomo is expected to make the announcement in a video this week.

More from The New York Times:

Mr. Cuomo was the prohibitive favorite for much of the Democratic primary for mayor, leading in most polls until the very end. A super PAC spent more than $22 million to promote his candidacy and launch a late-stage attack on Mr. Mamdani, once it became clear that he posed a threat to Mr. Cuomo.

Mr. Mamdani, who had been a relatively unknown assemblyman from Queens, was a distant second in most polls, but closed the gap after the race’s two debates. He ultimately defeated Mr. Cuomo by more than 12 percentage points.

Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 6 to 1 margin in New York City, and the winner of the Democratic primary is usually a heavy favorite to win the general election.

The primary defeat seemed to temporarily humble Mr. Cuomo, who credited Mr. Mamdani with running a better race and openly questioned whether he still had a viable path to becoming mayor. His rededication to running as an independent on his Fight and Deliver ballot line was first reported by NewsNation, a conservative news network where Mr. Cuomo’s brother, Chris Cuomo, hosts a show.

However, Cuomo will reportedly ask all candidates besides Mamdani to pledge to drop out by mid-September if they’re not leading in the polls.

The New York Post explained:

After his announcement, the ex-gov is going to ask all of the candidates — except for Democratic nominee Mamdani — to vow to drop out of the race come mid-September if they are not in the lead, himself included, a source close to the candidate told NewsNation.

Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent, appeared to be visibly annoyed on Sunday by Cuomo’s move when The Post caught up with him at the Bolivian Day Parade.

“We’re moving straight ahead. It’s so important that we continue to move ahead,” the mayor scoffed after at first refusing to comment and then quickly ducking into a car.

But he was in much better spirits later in the afternoon at Manhattan’s annual Carneval Vegano — as he cut the ribbon and the crowd began chanting, “Four more years!”

Asked by The Post at that point if he planned to drop out of the race to pave the way for Cuomo’s run, Hizzoner replied, “Are you kidding me?

“I didn’t lose in the primary,” quipped Adams — who as an independent wasn’t a primary candidate.
