President Trump Warns Elon Musk, Threatens ‘Serious Consequences’

President Trump issued a very direct warning to Elon Musk today when reporters asked about the possibility the billionaire might leverage his fortune against the President.

Rumors have started swirling in the wake of their feud that Elon might be poised to fund the opposition — throwing cash in to midterm elections to back Democrats and anti-Trump candidates.

The President didn’t specify exactly what he had in mind with that warning, but his intention seemed clear.

He wants Elon Musk to know that there will be “very serious consequences” for playing political games against him.

The idea that Elon might fund DEMOCRAT campaigns seems unlikely to me.

But so did the prospect that President Trump and Elon Musk would be at each other’s throats, openly attacking each other on X — until it happened.

And the fact that the President didn’t balk at the question as if it was absurd… makes me think there could be some truth to those rumors.

Maybe there’s some info along these lines that the President has gotten wind of already?

President Trump made the comments during a phone call with NBC News.

And during the interview, he also gave a completely different take (A HIGHLY INTRIGUING TAKE…) on the impact his dustup with Elon has had on the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, according to a report from The Hill:

President Trump on Saturday said tech billionaire Elon Musk will face “serious consequences” if he moves to support Democratic political candidates in any upcoming elections, following a public rift between the two in recent days.

In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said Musk “will have to pay the consequences” if he backs opponents to GOP lawmakers who support the GOP’s “big, beautiful bill.”

“He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,” he told the outlet.

The president’s remarks comes after he signaled his bromance with Musk is over as a tiff about the GOP megabill spiraled into an all-out brawl on social media. Musk went so far as to allege that Trump is named in the Jeffrey Epstein files, backed a call for impeachment and suggested he would have lost the presidential election without his support.

Trump in response threatened to cancel federal government contracts for Musk’s companies while calling the Tesla and SpaceX CEO “crazy.”

“The Republican Party has never been united like this before. It’s never been. It’s actually more so than it was three days ago,” Trump said, stating Musk’s outburst benefited his push to get the bill passed before July 4.

“I think, actually, Elon brought out the strengths of the bill because people that weren’t as focused started focusing on it, and they see how good it is,” the president added. “So in that sense, there was a big favor. But I think Elon, really, I think it’s a shame that he’s so depressed and so heartbroken.” (Emphasis added.)

Leave it to President Trump to come out of this with MORE of a chance for his landmark legislation to pass than before!

While the entire mainstream media is assuming this just TANKED the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ — it seems that the pot stirring we just saw may have helped it along.

And again I wonder, if only in the back recesses of my mind…

Is this all gamesmanship and theater?

Did President Trump enlist Elon’s help one final time at the VERY MOMENT that he was on the way out the door anyway per federal regulations for a “Special Government Employee”?  (I’m still leaving room for that possibility.)

But I’m also forced to work under the assumption that what we’re seeing on the surface might be genuine upheaval; and the threats might be real, as well.

Here’s a clip of NBC’s Kristen Welker describing her phone call with President Trump during which he made the “serious consequences” comment:

Hearing Welker describe her conversation with the President, I again have to wonder if this is all for show.

Did President Trump just find a way to push the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ across the finish line by stirring things up just as the legislation seemed to be bogging down?

And if we see Elon Musk and President Trump come back together “for the good of the nation” — agreeing to disagree on some finer points (which I believe they DO…) — I’m going to be hard pressed to see this as anything other than one of those famous 5-D chess moves that everyone’s always talking about.

I keep thinking about this clip (I shared it a few days ago in another related story) of Megyn Kelly describing something JUST LIKE THAT on Shawn Ryan’s podcast:

I can’t help it.  It SEEMS almost MORE logical to me… that this is a ploy to boost the chance of passing the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’!

Then again, as some have pointed out, President Trump is talking about how DISRESPECTED he feels by Elon:

The Epstein claim notwithstanding, President Trump doesn’t play around with disrespect.

And his focus on that aspect of the turmoil with Elon would seem to argue in favor of this being exactly what it seems like on the surface; a terrible falling out, with potentially “very serious consequences”.

That theme of disrespect has come up in media coverage today, and usually in proximity to the speculation that Elon might “switch sides”, as reported by Newsweek:

President Donald Trump on Saturday made clear in an interview with NBC News that Elon Musk will face ‘very serious consequences’ if the tech billionaire starts to fund Democrats in the wake of the fallout between the two former allies.

The high-profile feud between the president and the former leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) began after Musk expressed criticism of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

Musk has repeatedly criticized the bill, calling it “outrageous” and “pork-filled,” adding that it’s a “disgusting abomination.”

Trump initially avoided directly addressing Musk but waded into the battle on Thursday, calling his one-time close ally “crazy” and suggesting he has “Trump derangement syndrome.”

Some have speculated the Musk could switch sides and start funding Democratic candidates as a way of getting back at Trump and Republicans, which the president has warned his former ally would be a bad idea.

“I think it’s a very bad thing, because he’s very disrespectful. You could not disrespect the office of the President,” Trump said.

Musk, as part of the war of words that erupted on Thursday, asked his followers on X if they thought that America needed a new, third party to rival the Democrats and Republicans, with over 80 percent of respondents saying “Yes.” (Emphasis added.)

I would really like to know what President Trump is referring to when he warns about those “consequences”.

Is that a thinly-veiled threat to end the government contracts held by Elon’s companies?

Or is he just sort of off-the-cuff pointing out that Elon will take a hit when the free market allows MAGA and Trump-supporters to express their unhappiness with the billionaire with their pocketbooks?

Or… is President Trump simply referencing the impact to the COUNTRY if Elon funds opposition candidates that will effectively hurt President Trump’s agenda in Congress in the final 2 years of this term?

Your guess is as good as mine right now.

I did run across this clip of Musk from an NBC interview back in 2023 that might be relevant to the current turmoil:

Those comments were made when Elon was still considered the “new” owner of Twitter, even before the name change.

He was being threatened for allowing free speech on his own platform.

If nothing else, I’ll give Elon this much: he doesn’t scare easily.

He doesn’t respond well to threats.

And he doesn’t have a backbone that’s designed to BEND in the face of consequences.

I generally like that as a character trait; I STRIVE to be like that.

But President Trump is EXACTLY THE SAME in that regard — which is why I like them BOTH.

And there’s a fine line between it being a positive character trait, or bubbling up in to obstinate stubborn pride when emotions boil over.

For the good of both men, and that of the nation, I hope we don’t see this situation develop in to reciprocal powerplays intended to hurt the other.

I far prefer the scenario where cooler heads prevail, or “pretend” to do so as a result of a giant ruse flawlessly executed.

But as things sit, we don’t really know for sure which it is.

You’ll be the first to know… if I figure it out.

How would you approach that?
